Good advice thanks! We have a pet turtle so I know that ammonia smell (when I clean the filter). I really don't want that sticking around!
I was thinking about doing cloth at the beginning of my pregnancy due to cost, less trash, and the chemicals that are put in disposable diapers but once I saw the effort between scraping the cloth diapers, pre soaking them, washing them and hanging certain parts to dry versus machine drying other parts I was swayed a bit the other way. Then of course due to improper cleanings either by human default or machine default theres the stripping process that needs to be done to completely start your diaper from scratch and thats a decent process in itself. You also have the fact that cloth diapers tend to leak more and are not quite as absorbent ( or so Ive been informed by a lot of cloth diaperers. And if you pack cloth diapers to go out in public or whatever that you firmly believe are clean and your child suddenly smells of ammonia ( due to the improperly cleaned diaper) you can try another diaper that was also improperly cleaned and continue to get the smell. Yes disposable ones are full of chemicals and produce more trash in land fills notto mention the number of years it takes to break down but atleast you know your baby is getting a fresh clean diaper without the washing, drying, and stripping processes. I asked several people as well about the "G diapers" which is a cloth outer shell with a disposable ( more eco friendly) inner shell and nobody seems to have good luck with them once their babies become mobile. If your set on doing cloth diapering you'll save more money in the end but you'll need to be dedicated to the process and have the time to properly clean and or strip the diapers. Disposable ones cost more, are worse for the enviroment, but your baby always has a fresh clean bum, and your not spending hours each week tied up in dirty diaper laundry.
