Folic Acid

Even though prenatal vitamins contain folic acid I've heard that it's a good idea to take extra during pregnancy. I didn't know much about folic acid during my first pregnancy I only took my prenatal vitamins and my son turned out just fine.  Is anyone taking extra folic Acid or has anyone been prescribed folic Acid?!

I am also on 4mg of folic acid on top of my prenatals. It helps the bones develop n there is changes baby could come out early.. I'm pregnant with triplets and the second they found out it was given to me without any thought. My high risk doctors said  if not needed don't take extra

Prenatals are fine. I am prescribed 5mg extra but that's only because I am on seizure meds.

I would just talk to your Dr. My opinion is a prenatal has 100% of what you need if it says on the bottle. I don't take anything extra. Also you can take too much so just be careful.

I take extra folic acid. I've never been told it was bad. It is on my medication list with the Dr office and they go over it every time I'm seen. As for what dosage is right for you, I can't say. I will say, the reason I take extra is because I am a smoker. I was told in my first pregnancy that smoking leeches the folic acid out of your body, causing a deficiency from the start. I take the extra to combat this. Neural tube defects and the like are no joke. So don't think I advocate smoking - pregnant or otherwise. My children will tell you that even Mom thinks it's disgusting and smelly and very bad for anyone, but can't break the habit. I preach to them that I wish I had never started, hoping they'll make better choices. I have to say, asthma and bronchitis and thousands of dollars later... it's definately not as cool as I thought!
Sorry for turning that into a rant.
