Cats do not try to smother babies! I had cats with both of my sons, never had any problems, my family had cats when I was born with no problems. Cats tend to not want to be around babies, they're too noisy. I have been around animals my entire life and worked with them for several years and never heard of any cats sleeping on, or trying to smother babies in any way. I would not get rid of them.

My fiance has two cats and I'm not really a cat person. I wouldn't dare ask him to get rid of them, but I have asked him to stop them from sleeping our room and keeping them out of the baby's room. I don't trust cats nor any animal for that matter to be around my baby unattended. Not only have I heard stories but after seeing one of his cats jump in my baby's bassinet and try sleeping in it I flipped.

My cat became an outdoor cat when I became pregnant for my first child. Something snapped in me and I couldn't take her living in my home anymore. Lol. I couldnt stand the idea of her using her litter box then jumping into my infant's bed. Ick! She also got into a bad habit of jump on my counter and table when I wasn't around. I'd find cat hair all over them! Not cool! It got worse when I would actually catch her climbing all over all my brand new baby things. So out she went. She was allowed to come inside to eat and then go right back out. She really didn't mind, she rathers to be outside anyways.
Now that my son is older I let her inside a lot more often, she ends up going outside anyway though, because she can't stand my child. Lol
It worked out for us. I don't have the heart to drop her off at a pound and I couldn't find her a new home. So I figured she'd live a happy life chasing the birds and creeping around my yard for the rest of her days. Lol

Please don't listen to old wives tales if cats smothering infants etc.

We plan to put crib up about a month before baby is due. We will watch to see if cat shows intrested in it or bassinet.
VET/Pet Store says cats don't like the smell if citrus, so we will apply natural
citrus below bassinet/crib should kitty try to sleep in them.

Dr. States that My Husband and I aren't suspose to sleep with baby....same issue, we may smother baby at night. This doesn't mean I need to get rid of husband or myself....it means we will use bassinet next to bed.

Since cat sleeps on foot of our bed, I will not be using the new little mini baby beds you put in bed with you for baby....we will use bassinet to keep the xat, and us, from any potential harm to vaby during sleeps.

I have never had a problem with cats around my child. I have always had 1 to 3 cats at a time ever since I was little. I now have 2 cats, and a 12yr old. My cats at that time never did anything to the baby. The thing is, to keep the cat away from where the baby sleeps, because the cat will be attracted to the milk smell on the babies breath and end up jumping in where the baby is and liking the mouth. That's what causes suffocation.  But like I said, I never had that problem.  So just watch the cat around the baby, and make sure the cat don't jump in the crib or where ever the baby sleeps. Cats do get jealous,  but their jealousy reaction is more of being whinny, craving your attention, jumping on you. And all that...If your cat has deeper issues with jealousy then the reaction can get worse, peeing or pooping on the babies things, scratching the baby,  hissing at the baby. I think you should just keep the cat for now, and see how he or she reacts to the baby at first. And believe it or not, their are training aids to help with correcting the cats behavior.  If you watch that show "my cat from hell". You can learn some tricks from there.  Make sure when you bring baby home you do an introduction and let your cat walk up to the baby and smell the baby. Place the carseat on the floor with the baby still in there and see if your cat will come up to the baby.  And don't forget to give your cat attention as well throughout the day so the cat knows you still love him or her and still have time for him or her even though you just brought a baby home.

The whole 'cats smother babies' thing is an urban legend. Doesn't actually happen. Comes from the same era as the other superstitions about cats and witches and all that nonsense.
By all means, supervise your pets around your children and vice versa. By all means, don't allow them to sleep in the same room if that's your choice. But if you really think that you should just get rid of your pet because you're having a baby, maybe you shouldn't have gotten a pet in the first place.
Our two rescue cats are part of our family. One of them was still a kitten when my son was born, they snuggled and cuddled and napped together (yes, supervised) from the very first and my son has never once been scratched by him no matter how unknowingly rough he could sometimes be as a baby and a toddler. Our second rescue we got when my son was 2 - he's still a rambunctious adolescent cat with tons of energy and has scratched a couple of times, but he loves my almost-4yo son more than anything, follows him around the house and sleeps with him every night. They are all close buddies and I can't imagine just getting rid of such smart and loving animals because of a fear that could easily be overcome by proper supervision.

I don't have cats but I have 3 dogs and the bind between animals and babies/children is absolutely amazing. They become the best of friends and it's so adorable to watch. I own 2 chihuahuas and 1 staffy and to be honest my staffy just loves and adores my 2 year old they have grown up together my chihuahuas really don't care lol but as long as you treat them right and teach your little ones as they grow how to handle them etc it's no problem at all. I leave my 2 year old alone with my dogs but never for more than a few seconds at a time like if I go grab a drink or something even though they have amazing bonds with each other you just never know. No need to rid of your animals, they are family aswell they deserve to stay unless ofcourse they are a danger but that's all to do with how you raise them I believe :)

We are making a lid-type thing to put over the crib. That way my cats can't climb in and smother baby. They are very lovey cats and sleep with me and my other kids all the time. I'm afraid of an accident.

BabyWidmer, i really don't want to part with my fur babies as awful as they may be lol. My husband has built them a "cat house" outside so if they don't take well to the baby, they have a little house of their own outside.

Breezy, in that situation I would find new homes for my cats. My husband had a doggie door and this stray cat would always come in. By the way I HATED this cat. Then so me how she became my cat. But hated everyone and started to attack my kids. Cat found a new loving home without kids:)

I Personally am not allowing my cats to sleep in the same room as my son. They like to jump on/sleep on everything that they aren't supposed to. I have to fight them off of everything and one of them gets pretty hostile when he doesn't get his way. And, they don't take too well to anything or anybody "new". They get hostile and attack the new person/item and attack me for allowing it in the house.

Ask your vet about your fears. I've heard that kids who grow up with pets have lower incidence of environmental allergies.  My 2 cats were very interested in crib & bbassinette but when baby arrived they wanted nothing to do with furniture or baby!   Now they tolerate my toddler.  He can be rough though so we try to teach him to be gentle. He tries to hug the cats!  One cat slept in same room with newborn and we never had an issue.  Baby wakes every 2 hours to eat so kitty was pretty tired in beginning.

I have a Sphynx and 2 dogs. I'm keeping all my animals. What they say about cats is a MYTH! Just don't leave any animals unattended with your baby.

Never leave them unattended together. But chances are they'll become great friends. And studies show kids who grow up with animals in the house develop fewer allergies.

I wouldn't get rid of your cat and I'm not just saying that because I work for the rspca . I understand your concerns but as long you don't leave unattended nothing will happen . My daughter is 5 years old now and one of my cats adores her . Follows her every where and she pushes her around in her little pushchair . Like best friends x

I've got 3 cats and all 3 I've had when my little girl was a baby and I have another baby on the way . They was completely fine . They are very cuddly cats but never went near my little girl . Apart from pop their little head over the Moses basket to look . You hear horror stories about things happening .I work for the rspca so many cats get brought into are care because women having babies . My advise is don't worry but you should never leave an animal unatended with a baby / child . Doesn't matter if you completely trust your pet . I hope my advise helps you x

I'm not sure what your cat is like but I know that cats can become very jealous of New babies and cause them harm or even death in retaliation. I think you should watch that cat around the baby or get rid of it.
