Hi busyme123. Great advice---  older thread though.  I know that waiting too long is hard for a few reasons---  as you get further along, shopping is a lot less fun and it's hard to put things together the bigger you are.  I think once a woman is out of her first trimester, she can start collecting for her baby.  :>)  good luck to all

Do a registry at Babies R Us, target, amazon etc and wait until you receive the completion coupon that comes a few weeks before baby is due. I'm 22 weeks with a girl and have purchased some clothes and other used items but will wait until the last few weeks to buy the bigger items. If you're worried about gender just keep the tags on and exchange if needed :)

It really depends.  If family/friends will be throwing you a baby shower then you really don't want to buy much until after the shower. If that's not the case I would wait until you were a few weeks into your second trimester.

I just buy the essentials... And then the rest as needed. You save a lot of money and headaches that way. A baby doesn't need as much as we are led to believe.

The second trimester is usually when it's safe, but anything can happen at any time.  I bought a lot of neutral things with my last one and bought some outfits after learning it was a boy.  This time around, I still have the neutral essentials, and I've bought some gender neutral newborn outfits sine I'm not finding out until birth if it's a he or a she.  I have 5 1/2 weeks until due date.
