Silver Nitrate

Have any of you mommies had to have silver nitrate put onto the remainder of your baby's umbilical cord stump? And if so how long did it take to fall off?

Surgical Spirits can also be used. Cleaning the umbilical cord with it at every nappy change will dry it up quickly. My daughter's fell off within 5days of birth.

The silver nitrate ruined a few pairs of outfits. It stains and you cannot get it out. This was a few years ago as my child is almost in kindergarten but I think the pediatrician said to clean with rubbing alcohol. Do not get it wet so don't use soap and water. You could give your little one an infection. When in doubt though call your pediatrician to be sure. It's stressful but once it's closed you'll feel so relieved.

That's exactly why I'm terrified. I'm so scared to even bother with it but I know I do have to clean it. Did your pedi recommend alcohol or soap and water to clean it? Also, did the silver leak onto clothing?

Yes I did. With my 2nd child. Her belly button wouldn't close up. The doctor had to do it 3 times total. It finally did heal but it was scary for me because that's an open wound. Keep it clean and do not get it wet. Follow exactly what the pediatrician says. I dont think silver nitrate hurts at all. It did leave a small brown scar on my daughters belly button though.
