baby shower drama! :(

So I talked to my grandmother and she has made a big deal about my baby shower rule being you buy your own food. (I'm having it at my favorite Mexican place) and she has went on and on about how I shouldn't make ppl buy their own food. Okay if I had enough money to rent a building and buy finger food then I wouldn't be having it at a restaurant. You don't have to buy food its just if you want to eat....

Have it at a park?
Get some cheap sandwiches and some chips.

We aren't inviting a lot of people and I don't mind her buying the cheese dip I'm just annoyed that it's this Saturday and she is just now complaining about it. I mean if she would didn't buy me gifts and just bought finger food and helped me rent the community building then I would be grateful but don't help out then the last min ***** to me. And we booked a area at the restaurant.

I mean to ask,  are you renting a party room from the restaurant for a certain amount,  with the understanding that any food they sell will be additional revenue for the restaurant,  but optional for all the guests to purchase?

I think it's gracious that she's willing to buy dip for everyone,  so it looks like the party is hosted.   The rule of thumb is,  when you invite people (especially if they're bringing gifts) you host a party and not make people purchase their food.  The restaurant is in a tricky position here - they certainly don't want to host a large party where only a few people choose to buy something.

Have you talked to the restaurant and said a large number of people are coming,  and they will hang out there but are unlikely to buy anything?

I think you should reconsider and listen to your grandmother.

When you go out with friends it's obviously perfectly fine for everyone to pay their own way - but when you host a shower for yourself where people bring you gifts,  you are hosting and they don't pay.

Girl just ignore it. Don't let her ruin your bog day. You do it how you want to.
