I would look it up for your state. Most states like stated have a long waiting list. I know here in iowa where I'm at they are in process of building new apartment complex for low income. I've never did it but I know some even look into help with purchasing a house. Here in some small towns people can get up to 50k for a down payment plus they take your income and make sure you can afford the payments.

Where  do to live? In California the lady is closed but basically it allows you to live in an apartment in the city you applied in for discounted rent, the rest you have to pay for...  I live with the in laws & they just got there's approved after years. We are currently looking for a three bedroom two bathroom. It's not easy either.

Section 8 is closed but you can still apply for affordable low income housing.

Insomniac185 is right about Florida and I believe missouri is the same way. You receive stipends for so much to go to your electric bill, so much to rent, and its always enough to cover the average familys use. Whatever you go over, you pay out of pocket.

Type in HUD offices for whatever state your in.  The Internet should have a list of every HUD office.  There's usually 1 per County.  Each office has a different waiting period you can apply for all of them and once your accepted by one you can use that voucher anywhere

In florida you just have to apply at the apartment or wherever the section 8 is and you have to meet certain requirements.  One is everyone in the house cannot be a full time student, certain income based on the price of rent (so base income would be different for a place that it 500 compared to one that is 800), maximum and minimum income requirements based on the number of people in the house, etc. So if you wanted a section 8 apartment all you would have to do is go there and apply and see if you qualify.

Some states you have to apply at your local housing authority but can only apply when there is an application opening.

In my state you sign up through the welfare office. And I know there is a very long waiting list. And they hold a "lottery" to even get on that waiting list. I don't know the exact details.. (I don't use it) but you live in approved houses/complexes and they allot you so much per rent. Say $700 then anythimg over that your responsible for psying
