names????

Can someone please tell me why names are put into color categories? Biracial baby names? Black baby names? Really? I was told I couldn't name my daughter azariah because it was a black girl name? Please explain to me how names are colored. Even if I was to have a mixed child his/her name wouldn't come from names that people thought was a biracial or mixed baby's name. It would be something meaningful to me.... I just really don't understand how names are colored.

Excitedmommy, gotta say, your brother is just being an ignoramus.  If he had told you that the name reminded him of Russia under Communism, at least he would have had an educated reason for his prejudice.  But confusing Nikita and Akita is just goofy.

My suggestion, when someone says a name is either "too" white or "too" black, is to ask them what they think will happen to your child as a result of the name, that wouldn't happen if you avoided one that was supposedly too white or too black by their judgement.  In some small communities it might be an issue, I guess, but are your kids going to live there all their lives?  Probably not.  There is nothing wrong with naming your kids to be citizens of the world and not just citizens of your local neighborhood.

The goal is to give your child a name you like that will keep his choices as broad as possible regarding who he wants to be and where he wants to go.  (And where he wants to buy a house.)  There is plenty of room in the world for names that have historically been associated with different geographic regions or groups of people.  (If they sound good to your ear, that is.  I kept having to fend off a Norwegian friend who would see me and suggest things like Gnurk and Thdank and Url to me whenever he saw me when I was pregnant.)

One of the baby names books I read said not to give a name with too low expectations.  Once Orlando Bloom said in an interview that having been given that name by his parents, it was "a lot to live up to."  But having a name like that has to be better than if he had been named Goober Blume or Stinker Blume.  Certainly a kid can rise above any name, but it is nice to have one without immediate baggage.  (I don't see Dante as being over-laden with that problem, though.  I always think of Edmund Dante in the Count of Monte Cristo.)

My baby is mixed, half white and half mexican. Were naming him Jaxon. I know for a fact that some of his family will have something to say about it, but i doubt theyll say it to my face. Jackson is my late grandpa's surname. I wish they WOULD say something about our son's name to me lol.

I wanted to name my son Nikita my brother told me he would call my baby like a dog.  I decided not to name him that. But tell me why that would be a dogs name? I know there is a breed called Akita not the same thing though

Honestly I was told that Dante was a ghetto name but when I looked it up Its actually Latin and a highly respected name. Don't listen to people do what you want. It's your baby not theirs.
