the nurse i talked to (and she checked their nursing book to make sure) said that its so little alcohol that gets threw the breast milk u just have to wait a few hours. and if u have one drink (beer or wine only) u can start nursing right away. it did say if u do want to have a few drinks that the best time is to wait till night after u feed your baby n his put to bed.

It is the same as blood alcohol limits ! so one standard drink in the first two hours, and one standard drink every hour after that = roughly one hour per drink for it to leave the system. Same as driving.

The test strips are garbage. They pick up.such a teeny amount that you can have one drink and it'll still test positive like 18 hours later which is absolutely ridiculous. A couple of the above posters have it right on. If you keep.it to one drink you're just fine. If you want to have a couple you ought to have them just after your baby goes to bed so you know you'll have a few hours to sober up before baby wakes up hungry. If you are feeling tipsy you'll have to wait - too drunk to drive means too drunk to nurse. But DONT believe the myths about "pump and dump" being the way to "fix" it. Your body metabolizes alcohol out of breastmilk just like it does from your bloodstream. Don't waste that liquid gold.
Keep nursing that baby! I went back to work at six weeks and started full-time nursing school at six months. It took pumping and dedication but I nursed my son for two years. If you didn't stop yet or didn't stop very long ago you should still be able to nurse your baby without any trouble! If you have trouble talk to a lactation consultant in your area. Best of luck!

The amount of alcohol that makes it into your milk is so low that it's no problem.

I thought the rule of thumb was that if you feel buzzed you can't but once it wears off your good to go but maybe try the test strips

Once you can no longer feel any effects of alcohol, your body is clear and your milk is clean. That's what the lactatuon consultants at my hospital all say.

You should limit yourself to only one drink per hour if you want to drink and breastfeed. If you have a drink and wait about 3 hours to feed your baby you should be ok. But again, that's if you stay under the 1 drink per hour...but you can use those test strips to make sure.

You can still breastfeed they make strips to test milk for alcohol so pump and check if it has alcohol dump it and try again in a couple hours until it clears or system alcohol might stay for 24 hrs I think

I'm not breast feeding neither because I have to work as well and I've known babies that drink can milk is just as healthy as the ones that's drinking breast milk. Just as long as the babies are getting fed!

I'm still in school and will be breast feeding and bottle feeding . I think its a good combo for ppl who have to get back to action after the 6 weeks , but hey its just a suggestion . and you should ask your doctor about the second part
