prenatal vitamins??

Is anyone choosing NOT to take folic acid and iodine? I took it for my first son and he was born with a tongue tie and a hyperspadius. And studies have been done on folic acid causing these. So is anyone choosing not to take these prenatal?

My midwife said to do my research about it, hinting towards not taking them. My son had his tongue tie cut at 1 month old and needs surgery on his hyperspadius next month and it breaks my heart. Thank you for your opinions ladies! :) with my first I had horrible morning sickness until 24 weeks.  And I haven't been taking. Them this time for about a week ND I'm feeling so much better. I think there are risks either way

According to my doctor, taking them before getting knocked up is ideal but study after study proves them effective if you start later too.
I'm taking them because I don't eat a lot of foods naturally high in folic acid. The ones I take have probiotics too, and it may be coincidental but I've not had any nausea or morning sickness at all (i'm 20 weeks).

No way. Those issues are so minor and so easily corrected. Not taking folic acid can lead to anencephaly, which basically means the baby's brain never develops and the baby might live a few hours after birth but might not even make it that long. One of the other defects that can be caused by a lack of folic acid is spina bifida - which can result in lifelong paralysis and permanent incontinence.
Folic acid is incredibly important!  I can't imagine why anyone would skip out on it.
And iodine... well, most of us get plenty of that from the salt in the foods we eat. I haven't heard of anyone needing supplemental iodine during pregnancy. But if you've been told you need it by a doctor, it's probably a good idea to take it - iodine deficiency can lead to serious thyroid issues.
