It's sad that someone would be their babies life at risk by continuing to smoke, it can cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and how can you carry a child in you for 9 months being so selfish and knowing you are putting that babies life at risk!

I was a smoker before I got pregnant with my first daughter. I quit the day I found out I was pregnant. My sister, however had a much stronger addiction and was told by her doctor to cut back as much as she could tolerate. She wotked her way down to just 3 a day in her first trimester and finally in her third she had totally quit. Just like all things in life, it is a process and not everyone can take the same path. Follow your doctor's advice for you and trust your mom instincts.

I would never smoke while pregnant. I don't smoke anyways but I think that is stupid that you think of yourself instead of you and your baby

It took me almost my entire first trimestervto quit. I had the support of my fiance who helped me wean. But I do agree that some women don't realize how hard it is to quit and that sometimes what is best for the baby is your cut back slowly. I still get cravings and am due in 2 weeks. For me quitting smoking was hardwr to quit than my drug addiction 3 years ago. Addictions are hard to kick but you can do it.

I smoked a pack every 3 days maybe. I found out I was pregnant and quit immediately. Talk about hard, and stressful. But no freaking way was I going to smoke and risk anything. I toughed it out big time. You can do it.♡

I think any sensible person would keep trying to stop, and keep trying until you do, I am far from up myself in any way and I know how hard it is. When you do quit the feeling is amazing!  No more guilt tripping yourself/nightmares honestly I feel great. I hate arrogant people that state the obvious but I also dislike mums to be that are under the impression they are doing no harm to their child because of course you could be.

@Clairwin-if the doctor told you that giving up coffee completely could kill your baby but if you Just cut back instead of quitting you'd have a better chance at a healthy baby would you still give up coffee? Just curious. Just curious... Since that's What my doctor told me I really think I am putting my baby first. Hmmmm.....food for thought.

When your pregnant baby comes first.  Its not a long time really in comparison with life.
I'd kill for a coffee, pate, a dippy egg. All these things id love but for my baby I'd give up anything, even my coffee addiction!

Thank you dear. Inappreciqte that. And yes...my doctor said the same thing.I was running a fever of 101+ and my blood pressure got above 180/100. They worried I was going to harm the baby from quitting so I'm like....ok. I'll follow the doctors advice since clearly simply quitting isn't an option for me. Had I been trying to conceive I would have quit prior to becoming pregnant...but we we're actively not trying and it just happened. So I was already stuck. I simply hate hearing people tell horror stories.....it's like....we are all a ware of the 1000 things that can go wrong whether I smoke or not....the last thing I want to do is sit and think about someone who apparently killed their baby from smoking. That's an awesome concept to have in my mind the next 23 weeks. It's extremely insensitive. We all need support and I know that no one would appreciate it. So why be insensitive and throw things in people's faces who already feel guilty enough???

I personally don't smoke but my sister does and when she was pregnant her doctor told her to cut down best she could and the stress of trying to quit would be more harmful to the baby than having the odd one

Obviously don't just smoke all day long but as a person who has tried for 6 years to conceive I don't think you are selfish as people state above

You have to be ready for extremely judgemental comments on this topic. I smoke. I'm 18 week's pregnant. I was not trying to get pregnant and was on birth control and everything but....it happened. I was specifically told by my doctor to not quit cold turkey. That I could miscarry. I went from 2 packs a day down to less than 10 Now. But yep. Still smoking. I've tried completely stopping 3 times but broke out into hives all 3 times and my blood pressure was extremely high and I started running a fever due to the withdrawals. So I find it amusing when these people say how SELFISH I AM and tell me how My baby is going to die and all this. Its like what would you like me to do? It would be nice not to hear the judgements but ya know what....I just don't care. Judge away. Tell me how selfish I am and how my baby might die. It would be the same as me telling you that if you drink caffeine or gain too much weight or don't get vaccinations or whatever how you could be killing your child. For those that could quit cold Turkey....good for you. But I can't and not everyone can. Nicotine is one of the strongest addictions there is and you just think it's as easy as mind over matter? When your body physically withdrawal from nicotine I can assure you it's not in ones mind. Its very real. There will always be women who smoked and had healthy babies and those who smoked and didn't. The same goes for women who font smoke. You could do everything right and your baby can still develop a heart defect and die at 3 days (Thanks for that story by the way.....TOTALLY made this expectant mom have warm and fuzzy feelings). It makes me laugh cause how would u like to hear stories like that. Were already stressed out and on edge. I already feel guilty. I don't need to hear stories about your friend of a friend that killed their baby. Real nice and once again....thank you to all for those really supportive and heart warming comments. Us SELFISH smokers will do our best to try and relax and sleep after that.

I think it's so awesome when women completely stop smoking when they find out they're pregnant. So much respect. Anything other than that and, I'm sorry, but I think it's very selfish. Asthma is one of the smallest side effects smoking can have on a baby. I have asthma and it S U C K S. Just imagine what else it could be doing to the baby.

I was smoking at least 6 a day before I found out I was pregnant. When I found out I stopped cold turkey straight away. For baby to have healthy brain development you need for it to have a healthy mum. If you're smoking your baby doesn't get as much oxygen in its system as it should be. It also can be a major cause in premature birth, baby being still born and cot death. So if you want to make sure to you've done all you can for this baby to be healthy cut that 3 a day out! ☺

I had a friend that would smoke and try to hide it from her husband the whole pregbancy. The baby was born with a heart condition related to the smoking and the baby died at 3 days old.

if your concerned about the affects of smoking on your baby for any mom that smokes quiting 18 months prior to concieving is the ideal time for there to be no negative affects on the baby. now that you are pregnant i think if quitting cold turkey is hard for you then the stress of that on you and your baby is worse for the health of both of you then having a smoke. i wouldn't stress i have never known anyone who has smoked to have had any problems with their child's health. including my mom who had 4 healthy girls all born well over 8 lbs and none of us have any other health concerns typically associated with smoking.

I think as soon as someone finds out they are pregnant they should say bye bye to cigarettes. Its not that hard to quit. Its mind over matter....do it for that sweet baby you are carrying.

I think you should keep up your efforts of being smoke free, you don't want to cause potential harm to your baby and you've already stopped anyway so why bother.
