So today I experienced for the first time swelling of the ankles. Can anyone recommend how to relieve the swelling or stop it from happening.

Yes put your feet up whenever you can. My doctor told me to lay down on my left side for 3 hours during the day and at least 10 hours at night. It's so hard for me to do that.  I always need to do a errand or something during the day. So If i can't actually lay down I always have my feet elevated. It does help. Also drink lots of water and stay away from salt. The salt thing kills me. Lol. This baby loves salty vinegary things. :)

Lay down & put your feet up. Sometimes it takes 3 hours or more for my swelling to come down completely.
