to the cat lovers

My cat is pretty much like my baby now. We sleep together every night and she is very protective of our house. She does not like when anyone else visits. Im nervous to see how she will act when my baby is born. So to everyone who has cats... how did it go when you brought your child home? Did you not let your cat sleep with you anymore (bc the baby will be next to your bed for a while)? Were they mean to them? Or were they just curious and got on with their lives?

OK this is different peoples opinions none of us are wrong or right fefesbabynumtwo . But I do agree with amandiepants . But I would give my pets up if they hurt my children in any way . But they have to have a chance to prove they are good pets or bad no one can just assume . I have two chiauahuas in side plus my two cats they come and go as they want and my 7 year old son has a pit bull we got her when she was a pup and is the best ever but she is a out sometimes kind of dog ( we have a small place) but please don't get mad or upset over my post .    And Katie_1989 you will know when you bring baby home what the best choice is . Good luck and congrats.

I don't think kits dumb to compare a pet and a child because my pets are my children, but that's just me. and my cats do sleep on me which is fine cuz baby won't be in our room.

No I wouldn't give my human child away. How completely stupid to even compare a human child to a pet. If you want to take the risk of something happening to your baby because of your cat thats on you. Plus I said if u have a cat to close the door while their sleeping. Plan and simple. I was referring to the ones that actually lay on their humans while they sleep that could endanger your baby.

Even if you give your cats to a good home, you are still uprooting them from the lives and people that they've known. I always say if you had a second child would you give your first one away? Absolutely not. My husband and I have 4 cats and they are our babies. Cats don't smother babies, they may like to lay near them, but they aren't dumb. Animals are very protective of all babies, even if they aren't from the same species. Will the cats be in the babies room while she's sleeping? No, we'll keep the door closed to the nursery to be safe, but other than that I have no issues with the kitties being around the baby.

I don't think people who eventually plan to have children should have pet's if they are just going to up and basically throw them away when the baby is born. Pets are forever. Not just when its convenient for you. I have 2 kittens both under 5 months old. I'm not even worried about them for a second around a newborn. She will be here in 12 weeks, and my little boys (kittens) are here to stay also. Not all cats want to be around your baby let alone smother it. They deserve a chance too.

I think all cats are different. My cat hates other animals but I moved into a house with a 6 month old and she didnt pay much attention to her. The baby even grabbed her tail and tried to chase her around but my cat was uninterested. However i wouldnt leave the cat in the room at night with you once baby is born just because you never know, smothering COULD happen. Also, for people talking about ammonia, since im preg my hubby has been cleaning the litter box and we clean it evert other day, it never smells strong like that so thats a silly reason to get rid of a cat. Especially if you just gave it to a shelter, thats messed up. Also, my cats litter box is in the laundry room so its not like we are sleeping next to it lol. Your just gunna have to test the waters with your animals, they may have to adjust at first but give them treats when they are nice to baby and lock them away if they try to scratch or are even remotely hostile. Always keep an eye on baby if animals are around!

I dont think it has anything to do with not paying close attention to ur newborn. What do u plan to do, never let the baby out of your site even for a minute? You gonna take the baby with you to the bathroom or have the baby sleep in your presence none stop without leaving the room for even a moment? Cause that's all it would take for the cat to jump in the crib and smother the baby. Best thing to do is have your baby sleep with the bedroom door closed so the cat can't get in. Even if your sleeping how would you know the cats not jumping in the crib??? Your asleep.

I have two cats and two small dogs they are great with my kids but they do not sleep with us so I'm not worried about them hurting or smothering the baby , I will be paying close attention to my small newborn ( not being mean) but how many new moms leave their newborn alone long enough for a cat to smother them I did not  . Im Sure you will figure something out good luck. And congrats

I agree with annajolly. We had two cats and got rid of them due to the ammonia smell and didn't want to even take the chance of the cat jumping into the crib and smothering the baby. Especially if they sleep with u they will think they can sleep in the babies crib too. It was easier for me to get rid of my cats cause I'm more a dog person anyway. Hope you work it out safely for your babies sake.

Cats tend to jump in the crib when the baby arrives and sometimes smother the child. They smell milk on the baby's breath And try to put their face in the baby's mouth. I would not advise having a cat around a baby.... Plus you should not be changing any litter or even smelling it due to the ammonia. Not good for unborn baby...

Im 20 weeks along and our cat is our only child!! Hes pretty spolied. My aunt told me that after we have the baby to have my fiance bring a blanket home from delivery so our cat can get used to her scent. Then when we all arrive home have my fiance carry baby and i walk in empty handed so i am available to his needs. Dont force baby on him and he will already be familiar with her smell and will come around to her when hes ready.
* hope this makes sense and helps!!

Our cat used to sleep in our bedroom before pregnancy and during. Also have 2 dogs. Whilst pregnant I stopped all animals in bedroom at night, as a precaution. Got them an extra comfy bed to sleep on and an extra blanket on the sofa. They got used to it quick so wasn't such a shock, new baby and being forced out. Cat didn't take any notice of baby though.

My cat loves to snuggle right now. She is currently laying over my belly. My cat is pretty mellow so I haven't put much thought into it. I think I'm just gonna hope for the best.
