Symptoms/Side Effects of Metformin

I have been taking Metformin 500mg 3x a day for almost a week now...on Friday, I had a problem digesting my food properly...It took until almost 5 o'clock for my breakfast biscuit to digest, which is very unusual being it was eaten at 9 or earlier...then after eating pizza  around 7 and going to sleep at about 1 a.m...I awoke at 5:39 a.m. gagging and vomitting to the point that I had to take phenergan to gain some relief...I have been nauseated every since Friday, with Saturday being the only exception due to the phenergan having me drowsy all day...I called the doctor and he suggested I go back to taking metformin twice daily...So I will see how this does...Has anyone else had a problem taking metformin?

Also I feel bloated at times and to keep from vomitting, I'm constantly belching (gross I know).

Thanks ladies for the replies...I'm still bloated, but I don't have the vomitting problem...I do have PCOS and overweight, but I have lost 6lbs(was 183, now 177)...I love pizza (supreme)...I don't eat a lot of spicy foods, and don't have problems with my blood sugars...I'm praying that I conceive this cycle as my alleged ovulation day is July 5th...me and DH have made sure that we BD at least every other day although early on it was almost everyday...FX'd and I hope for success...

do you take the extended release?  if not that may help with your symptoms.  I do have the same symptoms as you but I also have gastroparesis (my stomach doesn't contract properly).  I take 1500mg of the extended release and the only other problems I have had was occasional diarrhea.  If your already on extended release my only suggestion would be to eat smaller meals more often and don't eat past 6pm.  Pizza is my arch enemy!  if I even have it for lunch it comes up all night be careful with the spicy stuff.  I'm not sure if your overweight or not but if you have gained weight lately that can do it too.  Oh and side note I'm assuming you have PCOS since your on metformin... high glucose levels can cause gastroparesis.

I did when I was 16. I was dx with PCOS at age 16, started taking it right away. I an't even begin to tell you how Metformin made me feel. I was bloated, vomitting, I think that is why I lost so much weight on it. So I went to the docs, and I told them that I wasn't able to handle the side effects of the medication. I am now 24, and I am Metformin again..I am on 500 mg BID (twice a day), and I have been on it for 3 months now. I am moving up to 750mg BID in two weeks. This time around, I have been ok. I did get some stomach problems at first with loose stool (TMI sorry), but I havent had any reallly big problems. But my doc did say that it I can't do the 750 mg BID that we would cut it back, and try again later.
