Is weight gain important with twins?

Were you ever told that it is important to gain weight with twins and that you should eat more?

I looked at the twins book in the bookstore last night and it says to eat twice as many calories with twins. Did you have to do that?

With my first pregancy I also had gestational diabetes and was on a strict diet; I am afraid that with heavier diet diabetes will be exacerbated.

My Doc said for single pregnancy to gain 25-35lbs. And with twins, 30-40lbs.  I am 35 wks, and have gained 29lbs to date.  I feel great (considering) and the babies have been growing perfectly.  I eat when I am hungry, and try to eat a lot of fruit :)

My doctor told me around 30-40 lbs as well for twins. I carried them to 32+4 and gained 40 lbs total.

Instead of focusing on eating more, I mostly have been focusing on getting enough protein and calcium and have been making sure I get a good variety of healthy foods. I am 22 weeks today and have gained 25 lbs so far. Being pregnant with twins you will have a lot more doctor appointments and they will monitor your weight and your babies' growth so you will always know whether you are on the right track.

Thanks!!!  With morning sickness it is hard right now to eat even for one!

Oh I remember that well!  I lived on yogurt, bananas and peanut butter, and ensure drinks.  Couldn't stomach the thought of eating any other food.  But then, around 13wks or so, I was able to start eating other stuff :). Don't worry, the appetite will come :).

I gained 28 pounds and the twins were PERFECT!!!! I had to be induced at 38 weeks. I was all baby. Just focus on protein, that is what makes babies grow and gain the fat at the end. Good luck!

Talk to my ob today and he told me that weight gain is more important later on.  He said that both twins are developing well and he is not worried; I should just eat what I can.
