Weight Gain Requirements for Twins

I am reading When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads by Barbara Luke and Tamara Eberlein. It sounds like they have had a lot of success with helping mother's of multiples get their babies to a healthy weight before birth. The reason I got their book was I wanted to read something that let me know everything I should be doing deferently now that I know I am carrying twins. I was suprised by the amount of weight they say I should be gaining, especially in early pregnancy. According to their chart, someone with my BMI should gain 10-15 pounds by 10 weeks. I am fine with putting on the extra weight if it means my babies have a better chance of coming into this world healthy, I just want to make sure that it is in fact the right way to go about it. I plan to ask my doctor her opinion when I see her next week. In the mean time, I am just wondering if anyone else followed the weight gain guidelines in this book and if so how it worked for you.

That's good advice. I should probably try to up my protein. I should have better luck doing so now that the nausea seems to have passed and I can start eating more variety again.

I had to much nausea in the first trimester to gain any weight.  I gained my weight in the second trimester.  And, I actually lost a pound this past week.

That sounds so much more reasonable to me! :). I am 5 1/2 months now, and have gained 15.  I gained 5lbs in 2 weeks :) gulp!    I just couldn't imagine trying to lose all that weight in the end!   I am glad our docs agreed!

Well I saw my OB on Thursday and asked her about weight gain. She said I should gain about 35 lbs and she did not agree with the author's advice of trying to put on so much weight so early on. I'm realieved because at 8w1d I have only put on 2 lbs.

I have 15 month old twins and I gained a total of 40 lbs. my first trimester, I don't think I gained a significant amount of weight, maybe just 3-5 lbs. and in the last few weeks before they were born, I barely had an appetite (I blame the babies pushing everything in my body around that made me eat likes bird!).

Congratulations on the birth of your twins. I am so glad they were born so healthy. Thank you for responding to this. I am glad to hear you can gain a reasonable amount of weight and work out almost all the way up to your due date. I haven't gained a single pound yet so I already feel the weight gain requirements in this book are not always realistic.

mhv - The 30-40 lbs your doctor recommended sounds much more reasonable to me than 40-56. I will let you know what my doctor says about the books suggestions.

I just gave birth to my twins on Wednesday and gained 30lbs for the whole pregnancy. My pre- pregnancy weight was 130 so I started out with a normal BMI. I also did Bikram Yoba until the day before I went into labor at 39.2 weeks. My twins weighed 6.6lbs and 5.12 lbs

Wow!!  Yeah, I eat less each meal, but I eat more in general.... I am very interested in what your doctor says!  I had such a strong food aversion in the first 13wks, there is no way I could have gained that much! Lol.  And, wouldn't that make stretch marks more likely? My doc said that for twins, I should gain between 30-40lbs all together.   Interesting!!!!!!

Your height and weight put you in the same weight gain category as me and by 20 weeks they want us to gain between 20-30 pounds. According to the book, we should gain 40-56 pounds by 38 weeks. The reason they give for gaining more weight early on is that with twins as they grow your stomach has less room for food so they want you to store up some fat at the beginning. This is why I will definitely get my doctor's opinion before following this advise.
