5-6 weeks no heartbeat

I am not sure of my last LMP nor conception date. I was estimated that I was about 5 weeks. I recently went to the doctor with a positive pregnancy test and they did a beta HCG. Over the weekend (after the lab tests) I began spotting dark brown blood and slight cramping. The cramps were not very painful, the spotting varies and only when I wipe. On monday I passed a smalled thin dark brown blood clot. With much concern I went to the doctors. They examined me and stated that there was some blood, my hcg beta levels came back at 4,932. They got me into an ultrasound and determined that the sac measured approximately 5-6 weeks. They were not able to detect a heartbeat though the fetal pole was there. The tech informed me that it could be too soon to tell or it might not be a viable pregnancy. The doctor from the begining of the appointment was not very reassuring (discussing miscarriage before even examining me). After he reviewed the US he stated that he wasn't a 100% sure but he wanted me to return for another US NEXT WEEK! He came off to me as the type of person that expects the worst. I have been in the medical field for some time and understand not giving false hope but there should be some kind of reassurance of the unknown prior to knowing all facts. I am wondering if there is anyone that has been in the situation before, thier outcome etc. My fiancee says that we should hold out hope, after reading a lot the different weeks of hearing the heartbeat. Should I just give into the grim reality or continue to hold out hope?

hay, i had a similar prob, my doc was very negative and i was constantly on edge until i finally saw the heartbeat at 7 weeks, he kept going on about it might not be a viable pregnancy, i really thought the worst, once i got past that 7 weeks he was very positive.  Now i have a very healthy 2 yr old son :) some doctors just aren't very considerate and go about it the wrong way. Just stay positive and try no to stress yourself out :)

I have heard that once you hit around 6 weeks they don't rely on rising hcg levels to determine a viable pregnancy, they rely on a fetal heartbeat. so I wouldn't worry too much, it seems like correct procedure but he needs to work on his bedside manner.

With both of my pregnancys they have had a hard time finding heartbeats clear up into my second trimester. I know how scary it can be sitting there watching someone grimace as they prode around trying to find your baby's heartbeat but don't give up yet. I'll keep you in my thoughts

I had my ultrasound at 5 weeks and 1 day and all there was, was a gestation and yolk sac. I'm scared too. My dr said it was completely normal and try not to worry.

I definately plan on doing so. He talked about getting another level drawn but he never did, just stated he wanted to do another US next week. He said there was not point but yet he's not a 100% sure. If he's not sure then he should have ATTEMPTED to find out instead of just planning the worst. I may go for another opinion ASAP. Thanks for all the advice and encouraging words.

They have to do two hgc levels in a row...like two days apart and look for a specific rise...by the time you did that and got them back you would most likely have gotten the second sono...i wouldnt worry yet...but i would find a new doctor!!!

The bleeding is not constant and there are not painful cramps. I dont have period cramps (and thats what they told me to look for) I do have uncomfortable almost like pressure or horrible diahrrea feelings (only way I could think to describe it). I have read about implantation bleeding and even having a light period.

ya the heart doesnt start till the 6.5 -7th week.. give or take a couple days,  i wouldnt worry to much as it is far too early to... your hCG levels look pretty good too... are you still bleeding at all?...and remember bleeding can be absolutely harmless in the first trimester as long as it doesnt start to bleed a lot and isnt accompanied by painful cramps

The DR. didnt even want to repeat the beta levels which is a concern to me. But he kept repeating that he wasn't a 100% sure to wait til next week for the next one US. But would return to discussing how to remove it. I am confused and scared.

I had my first sono at 6w and there was no heartbeat...went back a week later and saw my little peanut...im 14w now...its totally normal not to see a heartbeat at 5-6 weeks...the fact there is a fetal pole is also a very positive thing...means things are moving in the right direction!! :)
