Amnio for lung Maturity

Hello Everyone,
I had an amnio done on Wed 11/20/07 and my score came back at 16. My doctor told me that it needs to be at least 39 does any one know how fast the lungs develop or how long it will take to get to that score. It seems like it would take a while to me. I am 36 1/2 weeks pregnant.
Thanks in advace for any help,

Yes that's true. It's very hard. Hopefully everything goes well on Tuesday and her lungs are mature. I wish you the best of luck. You'll be in my prayers =)

Hi Julz34,
I tried to find stuff online about lung maturity but had no luck. I didn't actually talk to the doctor only her nurse and she wasn't sure how fast it would climb. She just said that they wouldn't do another amnio for at least a week. I go back to the doctor on Tue so i will let you know what she has to say.
It is very hard having a child in the NICU no one understand unless they have been though it.
Thanks for your help.

Yeah its terrible when they have to go through that and not knowing whats going to happen next. I'm sorry I can't answer if her lungs will be mature. My daughter was induced a week early because they thought she was going to be 9-10lbs and she was ok. That was right at 39 weeks. But they were wrong about weight, she was only 7lbs 7oz. But as far as luing maturity she was good. Have you tried looking up anything online to see what the number are and how fast they climb? Or did the Dr say anything about how long it could take to go from a 16 to 39?

I wish you the best of luck, and hopefully when they repeat the test her lungs will be fully developed. Good Luck to you and baby. I will check back on this post to see if you write back.

My first son was born at 35 weeks and had breathing issues when he came out. He spent 21 day in the NICU. This is what we are trying to avoid. I won't be induced until i know this little girl is going to be ok.
They are going to do another amnio in a week or so to see if they are develped i was just wondering if chances are that would come out that they are fully develped. Thanks for your hlep

I just wrote to another girl on this subject, well a little different, but you can read on that. I had my son in my 37th week and his lungs weren't all the way developed ended up spending 10 days in the NICU and being intubated for 3 days. If you touched him he would cry which made his oxygen drop, suction wasn't all the way developed so he couldn't eat. But in 10 days time outside of me he got a lot better, so I would say 10 days time in you would do a world of difference =) If the Dr's say he's not ready do NOT have that baby unless it's life threatning to you and him/her. As long as you can handle whatever it is right now, just try and hnag in there. Just because you are considered full term, by all means dosen't mean the baby is developed all the way, just means they have a better chance at being able to save the baby. Good Luck, hang in there!!

They wanted to induce me this weekend due to some complications i have been having and really you are not full term until the end of your 37th week.

What made them do the amnio???  What made them question the development of the lungs??  I do know that the lungs are the last thing to develop.  I also know that as long as you carry to 37 weeks, you are considered full term.
