HCG confusion

At 5 weeks and 1 day my HCG levels are 5500.  Four days ago they were only 856.  This is my 3rd pregnancy.  A few friends are joking about twins...is that a possiblity with these numbers?  In for days it went up over 6 times the original number.  I do understand that only an u/s can definantly determine that.  But I was just curious.  Thanks.

Side note:  I am the most tired I have been.  My other two pregancies, I did not feel so worn down.  I am also more of an emotional mess than I was with the other two.

My daughter and husband have been trying for 5 years to get pregnant.  She is going to be 30 and he is 32 and they were ecstatic to find out they were pregnant.  However she went yesterday for  the first sono only to be told that he only sees the pole and there is no heartbeat.  He told her to expect some cramping and bleeding blah blah blah.  What kind of doctor is this????????????/  She is only 7 weeks pregnant, has no symptoms of miscarriage and all the symptoms of pregnancy.  She just went throught a very heart breaking death in the family and I think she is just worn down.  Can you please give us some encouraging news or help.

Hi!

I love your question, because I remember asking my RE the same one!  Their response was that you can't tell by the levels whether there is more than one. And I have to agree that they are right because my levels were nothing special, but my ultrasound was pretty remarkable (triplets).

The real answer is that twins is a possibility--the good news is that your doctor should be able to tell you already--usually the pregnancy is visible on ultrasound after the level is greater than 2000.

Congratulations--sounds like a healthy one! (two?  three?)
