When I had my epidural it was successful and I practically laughed my baby out! I asked the doctor about 10 times if I was doing it right because I couldn't feel a thing but sure enough after 3 pushes my boy was out.

I got the epidural at 4cm and its takes about 15 mins to completely take the pain away then only thing i felt after that was the pressure of my daughter moving down. It was a life saver.

I got my epidural when i was almost 6cm and it worked in 5 min my legs went numb and 20 30 min later my water broke and after pushing for about an hour and a half she came out, she tore me though because i had pushed a little to fast so i had to get stiched but omg it was a good thing i got that epidural, i didnt feel a thing and i had to push out the placenta, but worth the pain when i saw my daughter, all i felt was pressure i didnt even feel when i tore

Didn't feel a thing within minutes of getting the epidural, and I had a LONG labor - 40+ hours . They will talk the consent form that you need to sign before they administer it to you early on when checking in to the hospital and getting set up in your room. They give the epidural once you're around 4cm dilated :) I was numb for hourssss even after I delivered, from my lower back down to my toes

Normally they dont allow you to receive one until youre 4 cm or more if I remember correctly. It doesnt wear off normally because they just keep administering the meds through the catheter if you still feel pain BUT sometimes it wears off or fails for some women. With my 1st, i was completely numb for 10 hours straight and was fine. I got it right at 4 cm. With my 2nd, I got it at like 6 cm and it worked all the way up to the point I started pushing. They tried to give me more to relieve pain but it just didnt work for some reason. I wouldnt worry about when to get it though. I say when you absolutely cannot tolerate the pain, ask for it. It is very sucessful in most cases and you shouldnt feel anything more than pressure.

The hospital staff turned my epidural down when I started getting close to delivery and then off completely (though it was still slightly in effect) so that I could feel to push. I definitely felt it all, but at that point I was okay with it because I knew I was at the end.

If the epidural is successful and given close enough to pushing, all you really feel is pressure like you have to take a big #2 but no pain. When I received my epidural with my 2nd child, it wore off during pushing and I felt EVERYTHING.
