warning about membrane stripping

So I had a non stress test today and it took them a little while to get it started because they had a emergency c section well the nurse finally got me in and told me that they had a emergency c section so I asked why the woman had to have one (what would cause a emergency c section) the l&d nurse told me that two days prior the woman had her membranes swept and basically the baby wasn't ready but the sweep was enough to irritate her cervix enough to cause her water to break but because her body and baby wasn't ready she didn't dilate and after so long baby started showing signs of distress causing them to have to do emergency c section. I was going to ask my midwife if she would sweep mine to try and avoid induction but I'm really thinking twice I guess I thought if you got your membranes swept it meant you would go into labor or just get crampy and them not go into labor never thought of that happening I guess.......

Because of complicationd when I hit 36 weeks my doctor is going to try to start sweeping membranes since they do not want me to go past 38 weeks. Im 31+3 now. I had to have a c section for the same reason with my son but I did not have my membranes swept

I was a week over due and jumped in freezing cold water and my water broke.....i wasnt dialated or anything i didnt even go into labour!!! They left me with my water broken for 21 hours before they gave me potocine to induce!! My daughter never went into destress or anything i think it just depends on the person and there bodies!!! This women might have had this outcome even with her body being ready for labour!!!

I'm 37 weeks today I was going to ask my midwife to sweep mine but I think I'm going to look more into it and do some research but like you said there are risk with anything  that could happen just being induced so if it could help with that ill probably still ask about it

You're absolutely right...there are risks with everything. I wasn't aware that that could happen but it does make sense how it could happen. How far along are you?

I think the point I was making is there are risk with everything and that was one risk that I wasn't aware of with that.

I got mine swept at 1cm, the day after my due date, and then my dr ended up inducing me after that anyway. She said that having it done probably made my induction go smoother though.

That could have all happened without a membrane sweep, usually they won't work unless you're already near labor. That nurse sure made a huge HIPAA violation though :/

They normally only do a sweep i believe if u r dilated at 3cm or more. anything b4 that could cause what the lady n the emergency csection went thru she must have got the sweep to early. I had one done n went n2 labor the next night all went fine for me i guess it varies with each women n pregnancy.
