Actually, I work in a pharmaceutical company developing vaccines. The H1N1 shot is the same as all the other flu shots every year. They pretty much took a culture from someone who had the strain that is going around, the took two portions out of the virus, and inserted them into a protein (the same protein that is in all other flu shots, with the two regions being the only difference). They then use egg whites to stabilize the protein and when it is injected into our bodies, we produce an immune response to those two areas, causing us to develop a memory for that strain.

There's a huge myth that the flu shot can make you sick. It's not true because it is not live virus- it's only a protein. We do develop an immune response, which can seem like a cold is starting but it should quickly go away. If you do get a cold after the flu shot, it's just a coincidence. And if it is flu like symptoms, it very well could be the flu, but a completely different strain, which you just happened to pick up on your own.

I think that all pregnant women should absolutely get the flu shot. It definately can't hurt (unless you have an egg-related allergy), and who knows, it could protect you and your baby. It's a win win situation. However, I would recommend against the Nasal shot, which is actual live virus. If you get it, I would only get the dead protein- the injectable one.

I will be getting it as soon as I can!  I have done my research, talked with my OB and GP, and talked with my family.  Getting the vaccine is what we feel is best.  It's scary either way but I would rather take my chances with the vaccine.  I feel too many pregnant women have died from the H1N1 virus.

I am getting it, although my area only has the nasal ones right now, and being pregnant, I have to wait til they get the shots in. My 8 mo old will also be getting the shot. My doctors told me the risks are higher if myseld or my 8 mo old were to get the swine flu rather than get teh shot. it could risk out lives. So, we will be getting it!

I agree - don't believe everything you read...it's made the same exact way as the regular flu shot - it contains a strand of the H1N1's DNA but it's DEAD it's also made form the same makers of the flu shot. I'm still waiting for it in my area. My OB said on Monday if I find it somewhere that's already recieved their shipment to go and get it instead of waiting. So yes, I will be getting it.

ask your doctor about this. you can't believe everything you hear on the internet all the time and there have been alot of pregnant women that have died from h1n1. in fact pregnant women are at the top of the list for high risk people and are the first people that are allowed to receive the vaccine...i doubt if it could cause pre term labor or a still born this would be the case--the fda tests these things before the go out to the stores...just talk to your doctor...dont read the internet. if you dont get it it could endanger you & your baby.. but you need to make sure its perfectly safe too. good luck!! let me know what your doc says-- i have been wanting to get a vaccine myself.

I will not be getting it. Too new and not enough testing for me to risk it. I have never had the regular flu shot before and haven't had the flu in over ten years.
