Home made formula?

Is it good or bad for my son? It is evaporated milk cut down by water and a little karo syrup to help his tummy. Plus I bought poly-vi-sol to help with added nutrients. He has a doc appointment today, but I would like to know you ladies' opinion on the matter. His stool is the same color as a breastfed babies and its the same consistency. He doesn't spit up as badly either. I tried some can formula on him and he got really gassy and really sick, like vomiting sick. I did breast feed, but I have to start working out to get back in shape to join the Marine Corps.

This is what my grandmother used for my mother and uncles as formula when they were infants. I'm not certain as to what all she put in it, but the base was evaporated milk. I know that their fine and all of that, but formula has come a long way since those days. I would be very hesitant to use evaporated milk as a formula since there's many other vitamins and nutrients that the baby may or may not be able to get from the added poly vi sol.

I feel your pain as far as finding a suitable formula goes. My dd has severe reflux and a soy/cow's milk protein allergy, so she's on special formula. When I say special, I mean that it is cow's milk formula, but it is already partially broken down so that she doesn't get sick when her body tries to digest the proteins. We also add rice cereal to her bottles. We tried Good Start and her body couldn't handle it at all. She projectile vomited constantly. We tried soy and it also didn't work. She's now on Similac Alimentum as approved by her doctor ( i get it on wic), but I felt that the Enfamil Nutramigen worked much better as she's chronically constipated on the Alimentum with the addition of the rice cereal in her bottles.

I say talk to your ped and see if he or she is okay with this and if not, try your luck at finding a formula.

That is the type of formula our parents used (at least if you are my age it is)

Child rearing has come so far since then.  Back then they didn't use carseats & they were told to put babies to sleep on their tummies...  along with so much more!

Formula has also come a long way.  You really should find one that is right for your baby.  Have you talked to the health department?  Wic is a program for women infants & children.  They can help guide you to a formula that is better for your baby.  You may also qualify to get it free.  When I had my 6 yr old she was getting sick on hers too.  They switched her to soy formula & it worked nicely for her.

Talk to you doctor.  It is also common for babies tummies to be upset with a new formula.  Their digestive system is sooo new & it may take awhile for them to get used to it.

You do not need to make any excuses for breastfeeding or not.  That is your choice!  what works for some on that matter, does not work for others.

Personally I wuoldn't go with that.  I don't think the poly vi sol has all of the nutrients that are contained in formula, especially with the added DHA and ARA and other things they put in to make it more like breastmilk nowadays.

How is his waeight gain, do you know? What type of formula did you try?  Was it milk based or soy based?  There are so many choices out there that one of them is bound to work well for him.  Have you tried the gerber good start sensitive?  Or maybe enfamil AR, isomil is a good soy one.

Definately talk to his ped, he can probably recommend a really good formula to use.  The gerber good start formulas are about as close to breastmilk as you can get in a formula version.

Keep in mind that when you switch from breastmilk to formula babies are GOING to have gastrointestinal issues for awhile until their sensitive little digestive systems get accustomed to working harder to digest the formula.

Formula is very strictly regulated by the FDA. Its honestly a question that you'll have to ask your doctor.
