Here where I'm at they put it on the top of your hand. I have had many IVs in my life, but when I was in labor with my daughter that IV was the easiest, because you are more concentrated on the contractions than the needle. They put my IV in and taped it down so that I could still walk around. It was nice.

When they put it in, theyll put it wherever they can find the best looking vein. Maybe the bend of your arm, hand, or forearm. As a nurse, I like to put them in the forearm because you can still bend the arm without it being uncomfortable, and you can still use/wash your hands withoug damaging it.

Theyll clean it and poke you with a needle with a little plastic tube around it (catheter). Once they see that its in (blood return) they remove the needle and leave the plastic part in.

Ive never had one, but all my patients say it doesnt hurt, its just awkward because its a foreign object in your body. Hope this helps!

Its just annoying... it really dosnt hurt at all. I dont reallt know how to explain the process but you really shouldnt worry. I have always been scared to get an iv (never had one) until i was admitted to the hospital 2 weeks ago and i expected the worse. I had to spend the night and the iv fell out so i had to get it reinserted. It was uncomfortable but really not baf

I had an epidural.. and to me that was way more uncomfortable than the IV.. Im more concerned about that bc with me they couldnt get it in my back last time and it took a couple of tries, so Im a little nervous for when they do it this time..
