Irregular cycle, TTC

My menstrual cycle is extremely irregular. I had constant flow for about 2.5 months, Januay-March. I had a regular period in early April and have not had one since. My husband and I are trying to conceive baby #2, our son is 1 year old. We have not had any luck conceiving, which is frustrating because we've been trying since our son was about 3 weeks old. I know that doctors recommend to wait 2 years between each child and to take birth control pills to regulate the menstrual cycle, but we want our kids as close in age as possible and I just can't bring myself to take the pills. I feel like every day I take another is a day that I could be getting pregnant. I also understand that it can take a healthy couple up to 2 years to conceive, but we are growing impatient. Is there any other way to fix my problem (as opposed to birth control)?

Details- I had abnormal pre-cancerous cells removed from my cervix in December and have not been back for a checkup yet (wondering if that has anything to do with it)
I'm more concerned with getting pregnant than regulating my cycle- that is the point of my question.

Thanks!

Thank you! I am not breast feeding, I only did for 2 months. My OB/GYN isn't thrilled that we want to get pregnant so soon and will not put me on any fertility enhancing prescriptions, especially because I'm only almost 20 and my husband is 25. I would switch to another doctor, but I loved him as my OB and will not trust anyone else. He is awesome as my OB, but not so much elsewhere. I'm not entirely sure how to get him to understand that we're ready for another baby and want a second one asap. Any advice on how to talk to him about this?

I feel like my doctor is particularly concerned because my husband and I are so young and he has suggested that a lot of first-time mothers get the post-pregnancy blues. That they want to be pregnant again, more than to have another baby.

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would check some hormone levels.  Depending upon the results of the tests, I would probably start you on Clomid which can help you to ovulate more frequently and also regulate your cycle.
In many cases it can speed up the time to conception.
One other note: if you are breast feeding that can delay the return of normal regular cycles.
Hope this helps!

I have tried tracking cervical mucus. I understand that if you're on a 28 day cycle, average ovulation is day 14 and you should have sex in the days leading up to ovulation. I used ovulation predictor kits for 4 months and stopped using them because they kept a strong positive every day for 3 weeks, one time. I have been eating healthier and exercising regularly.
