Low fetal heart rate

I went to get an ultrasound today and thought I was about 6 and 1/2 weeks along however the baby was measuring only 5 and 1/2 weeks and the doctor said that the heartbeat was only around 90 BPM and it was a bad sign. Am I at risk of miscarrying?

Hi-
I went to get a transvaginal ultrasound a couple days ago and they said I was measuring 6 weeks when they originally thought I was 8 weeks according to my last menstrual period. The tech also told me the heart rate was low at 45 bpm , I have been reading info on the internet and I cant find anyone with a heart rate that low ..Im hoping but preparing for the worst, have you ever known anyone with a good outcome

Hi!
I wouldn't say that there is no risk of miscarrying, but I would also be optimistic.  As we are doing more and more earlier ultrasound scans, we are starting to realize that a low heartbeat at this gestational age is NORMAL!  In another week or two it will pick up dramatically to about 160 and then will taper down to about 140 at term. So I would NOT consider that a bad sign at all.

If there is a heartbeat on the ultrasound, I usually tell my patients the chances are about 90-95% that things will go well and the pregnancy will continue. I certainly hope this is true in your case!

Best Wishes and Congratulations!
