Myths or serious health concerns?

OK so my room-mate and I get into heated debates about this.. She had a friend Lauren over who is 5 months pregnant, and this girl wreaked of cigarettes. After the girl left I commented on how Lauren should NOT be smoking, and my room-mate said that Lauren's doctor said she can't quit cold turkey because it will send her baby into shock, and she could loose the baby. She also made the comment on how she has heard at least 3 other OBGYN's say the same thing.. I looked this up and saw nothing supporting what she says..

Next... Lauren would smoke marijuana EVERY DAY, for the first few months of her pregnancy.. And she says her doctor said it is ok if she has severe morning sickness, because it's better t smoke it then to not eat and have her baby malnourished.. Then my room-mate defends this statement by saying that women in Jamaica have been smoking marijuana while pregnant for hundreds of years and their babies are healthy..

Finally...Lauren's doctor ALSO says that 2 glasses of wine a day are fine...

OK so am I over reacting.. or does this doctor need his/her license revoked? OR I have a feeling this girl is lying about what her doctor says is ok..

A lot of you are misinformed  and have no evidence or have even gone through it. I smoked mj w my first. He's probably smarter and more affectionate than you are!!! Child services were called after testing him and came back pos. No investigation nothing happened I kept my baby. But I didn't have any other substances in my system. He's healthy and 13 mo now! I'm prego w #2 seven weeks now. And I quit BC of the drama and I plan to breastfeed this one. I'm not a bad mom I have bipolar depression and clinical anxiery diagnosed at age 14. Mj is my perfect medication I hate all the heavy psych pills they want me to take. I cry and panic everyday now that I quit. I hope it gets better the longer I go w.o. mj I don't want to take meds while prego

So basically its just as risky as the drugs the drs do recomend.. and they recomend these drugs because they are legal... but i wonder if marajuana ever is legal to take while pregnant how ppls view on it will go?... because its already being taken for several health issues already prescribed by the drs..

I dont smoke anything, even pre-pregnancy, and rarely drink. But before I found out I was pregnant with my son at 8weeks I did drink quite heavily just one night. He is now 10 yrs old and is being tested for a high functioning autistic disorder. I will never know why he may have developed this way but I secretly wonder if that one night of drinking could have led to this. Even if Dr.s say it is safe, I would never risk knowingly drinking during my pregnancy, it's always something that will be in the back of my mind as a 'what if".

You only see what the TV or news wants you to see in Jamaica but I been there and i have seen babies that hard arm missing or a leg short then the other OR OTHER THINGS. Everything is a chance in life and its up to her . But really we all know its not healthy. Only God can see the future in everyones baby. I hope and pray it will be OK.

Im currently a doctoral student conducting my dissertation on prenatal alcohol exposure. I think its insane that there are doctors who still tell you its ok to drink at all during pregnancy. The deficits that children have when exposed to alcohol in utero are devastating. Everything from cognitive deficits, social skills deficits, higher rates of incarceration due to poor decision making as a result of malformation of the frontal lobe. Just so you all know European countries have higher rates of fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol syndrome because they still say it is ok for women to drink. I think they do this because studies are usually done on women who drink heavily through pregnancy, HOWEVER, how would it make sense to conduct studies on how much alcohol is ok before your baby has birth defects? Would it make sense to do a study on how much heroine or cocaine is ok to have during pregnancy?

As far as the debate on marijuanna, I think the fact that people are saying that no research has been done to show that it causes harm. What people need to understand is that research cannot be done on this population because people who smoke marijuanna during pregnancy rarely only smoke marijuana. They often smoke cigarettes, drink, or use other drugs, like this girl Lauren. Its nearly impossible to tease out what drug or substance caused a certain birth defect. Ladies please look up prenatal drug use and comb through the articles because you will find research on marijuanna use, however it will come up with other substances as well. There is research.

i dont really know much about this but i have smoked for years, i have 3 children and now pregnant with my 4th, in all my pregnancies i have never smoked, i either stopped as soon as i found out (my oldest wasn't planned, but as soon as i found out i stopped completely) i always started up again months after birth usually due to stress which was ridiculous as id done the hardest bit! but anyway i just feel as a mother its the first sacrifice your expected to make to give your baby the best start possible, i know giving up is extremely hard and dont judge anyone who does smoke while pregnant, but i think you should at least attempt to quit, the thing that gets to me is the people who dont bothe to have a go! and doesn't weed cause paranoia and problems in adults? i can only imagine it must cause problems for a developing baby proven or not! but hey that's only my opinion, rant over!

Quitting smoking is hard. I quit smoking, then relapsed when i miscarried. I didnt realise id get pregnant again so soon, im 4 weeks and down from about 15 initially to 1 a day. I know its still bad but stress is highly likely to cause miscarriage. I have tried my best and should be smoke free extremely soon!

Animals and humans are a lot different, just like they are a lot the same. It's still not clinically proven.

In my drug dependency class we did a section on how it affects it, based on animal studies, such as monkeys and apes. They also took them in test tubes and grew an animal fetus that way, some exposed to it, some not, and the results were what were listed above and now they are attempting to test the same on humans, but people are protesting against it.

Smiley_one, there is no actual test done to prove weed can do any harm to a baby in the womb, some have behavior problems and some are smarter than most kids there age. There is no proof weed does anything to a baby, Espically brain damage.

Jamaica is not a valid argument. Honestly Jamaica is not what everyone thinks it is. It is actually illegal to smoke that there, punishable by death. Also if she smokes pot a lot, and her baby comes out addicted to it, they will take the baby away from her faster than she can blink. The baby can come out with brain damage and other diseases like ADHD, ADD, stuff like that.

Quitting cold turkey is bad, depending on how much she smoked before she was pregnant, not because it would put the baby in shock, but because it would put her body in shock and cause harm to the baby, but slowing down is what needs to be done with the cigarettes. The pot needs to end because there are other things she can do to get her appetite back. To me, she doesn't sound like she is going to make a good mother seeing as she can't a few sacrifices for her child!

If a pregnancy is high risk, then a doctor will recommend slowly cutting back until they can quit. For a normal pregnancy, quitting cold turkey is fine.

I seriously doubt a doctor would outright recommend marijuana. He/she would prescribe something for morning sickness before even thinking about turning to marijuana.

No doctor in the US would recommend two glasses of wine a day. French women, who drink wine daily, are told one glass a day is their limit.

So I'd say either her doctor is crazy or she's lying.

Yes I forgot to mention the doctor said gradually cut back until you can quit.. She is down to 8 cigarette's a day. But I don't think she plans on quitting all the way. And says she doesn't smoke marijuana anymore because her morning sickness went away.

I know some Dr's will say don't quit cold turkey but cut down gradually and quit. I have never heard a Dr say keep smoking without attempting to quit.
