OT - - - Immunizations

For some time now, there has been so much in the press about immunizations and links to Autism, etc.   What is everyone's thoughts on this subject?  I'm sure that those of you who are currently TTC and those that already have children will have strong feelings one way or the other on this topic, so I would appreciate everyone's input.

My granddaughter went for her 2 month checkup, but my daughter was not comfortable getting all of the shots they recommended (they wanted to do 5 shots, ouch).  She is still considering getting the remaining shots, but wanted to research the side effects on the internet, etc.

So, how many of you will or will not have their child immunized?  Are there certain shots you wouldn't get (like the MMR)?  Thanks.

Well, my case could be an exception, but my daughter almost DIED, after the triple vaccine.  She had a severe allergic reaction to it, and we had to go to several doctors and medications to heal her. It wasnt after  1.5 years later that I "recovered " from the trauma, and after that she has only received ine more vaccine (chicken pox).  So, I guess everyone is different, and I respect everyone's point of view, but trust me: I do not feel comfortable when its vaccine time fo Pamela!

i believe in shots and my 2 month old has had all of the reccomended ones so far.
the benefits out weigh the risks but to each thier own...
but i would be SO mad if my baby somehow got measles or something awful from un-vaccinated kids....

I believe in immunizations, but I waited until 6 months to start.  I feel there is no reason to give a small baby all of those....IF they are not around children or a lot of public areas (ie Daycares).  They have been tested alot, but it is all up to personal choice.  My DH isnt vaccinated so that is partially why I chose to wait.  He wasnt/isnt comfortable with them, because he isnt vaccinated and hasnt gotten anything.  So tell her to do research on them all, so she feels comfortable with it.  When I was younger we only had 2-3 shots now they have so many more.  Also with the Rotavirus vac, they reccomend not giving it after 8 months of age because it can cause intestinal twisting.  So I gave Ethan the first one and realized this, so I probably wont follow up with the other 2 of these.  PM me if you have any questions.  I have researched everything to the hilt!!

I didn't know that about the schools.  It may depend on where you live though.  My 6 year old had to have a shot last year that she was missing.  The school sent a note home saying that if she didn't have the shot by a certain date, that she couldn't return to school until she received the shot.  They never asked my religion or anything.  But I did have all her other immunizations so I don't know.

It really depends on your doctor too.  I have a very modern doctor and she is really big on shots but of course for things like flu shots and things, they are only offered but certainly not required.  I got one for the first time this past year.

Personally, I feel that all shots should be given, but then I think about my oldest daughter who has some developmental issues and wonder if anything contributed to declining cognitive behaviors.  At this point, I would still go through with the shots, but I am "old school" and tend to go along with the program, unless there is proof of a problem that exists with the medicine.

Like I said earlier, it is ultimately their decision, but I just wondered how some of the "younger" generation is looking at these reports.

P.S.  I investigated the school issue, and even though the schools require the children to be immunized, a parent can still "opt out" for personal or religious reasons.  The only problem you have is if the school has an outbreak of something, they can force your child to stay away from school until they are sure that the outbreak is contained on campus.  This is for the un-immunized child's protection.  Sounds like they would miss a ton of school though, as there is always some type of outbreak.

I believe in vaccinations but I don't think that a small baby that does not have their immune system fully established should get bombarded by vaccinations.  I believe in having the absolutely necessary vaccines but spacing them out so that hte baby has a chance to develop normally without much intervention.  I hate unnecessary medical intervention even for me.
Anyway i also think that there are some vaccines that are not necessary like the the flu shot or the measels vaccine.  Especially the flu vaccine since sometimes they don't get the strain right and the kid is put through a painful needle for nothing and end up getting the flu anyway.

I actually don't agree with vaccinations. Jeremiah has not had any shots except a vitamin K shot the day he was born due to the blood blister on his head from coming down crooked. My little brother and sister were not vaccinated either and are 7 and 9 and just fine. We will homeschool, so he won't need anything. Just my opinion on it. I don't look down on anyone who does decide to vaccinate either. I just have my views on it and don't believe my child needs to be vaccinated. He has regular check-ups and everything is great! =)

I agree with vaccinations also.  As Joy said, we were all vaccinated as children.  Most of the illnesses that we are vaccinated for are very rare now, but we have vaccinations to thank for that.  I feel like the benefit outweighs the risk also.  And I also have the same moral objection as Joy.

Soooooo, I don't know why I commented because my response would model Joys :)  But I feel the same way as she and Laura.

And if her kids are in public school, the immunizations will be required; at least most of them.  She won't be able to enroll her kids in school without them.

They don't use mercury in all vaccinations anymore (save for a flu shot here and there). Plus, when you have every kid in the US getting vaccines and then some pop up with autism, what's the link? There are kids who have autism who've never had a single vaccination.

If you've seen a child with measles, mumps, rubella, lockjaw---you'll know the benefit outweighs the risk, no doubt. The most moral objection I have to *SOME* vaccines is that they are created with dead embryos' cells (aka stem cells). Not all stem cells come from embryos, but most do.

My sister is choosing not to vaccinate her children. I have chosen to vaccinate my children. I was vaccinated as a child, as were most of you I'm sure, and I do not have autism. In fact I excelled in school (all A's and honor rolls, social life, etc.).

i think not until after the child shows side effects(that could be long term or detrimental), should you question them....those 5 shots are the most important ones after baby comes home.....

laurab78--at 1st i thought the hpv-vac would be ok, till the county health dept showed up at my sisters MS, and started saying the shots HAD to be given.....a friend of my sisters went into the hosp the same day! and we live in TX where they are trying to push that as a requirement....my sister is scared sh*tless b/c of what happened to her friend(and NO, the parents were NOT aware!).....so i think my sisters school district is in the position of waiting for a lawsuit as well as the county/state.....idk exactly what happened, but apparently the "shot bus' arrived around lunch, and before the day was over, 911 had to rush the girl to ER and have her admitted for intense vaginal bleeding, fainting, and a drop in BP.....this was a girl who hadn't had her 1st period yet!

I believe in all recommended immunizations 100% and my child will be receiving all of them! =)

If I have a girl, she will also get the HPV vaccine whenever recommended (this one is controversial) b/c I believe in modern medicine. I know everyone has strong opinions on this topic and this is just mine! =)
