Hi there. I had a miscarriage on Father's Day, 2009 (June 21) at about 7 weeks along. My doctor said there is no reason to wait to conceive again. Although he did say I may not ovulate for 6 weeks. Well, it is early August, 09 and after feeling unusually emotional I took a home preggers test. Although no cycle since previous pregnancy and loss, this test (I took two) came out positive! The real reason doctors want people to wait - unless they have other underlying medical conditions - is to more accurately date the pregnancy. We will have to rely on ultrasound since my last period was back in April!
I posted on this link several times and I just wanted to follow up. My husband and I miscarried in April and then thought we were pregnant again four weeks later only to find out my HCG levels were taking a long time to drop from the miscarriage. Then the second month after the miscarriage (one cycle later) I have found out that I am pregnant again!! We are 5w1d and very very nervous. We have had an ultrasound already and the docter said things look good and that my HCG levels are much stronger this time (which is a good sign).
So, if you are reading this and have just miscarried know that there is hope! I spent the days after my miscarriage reading these logs and loved hearing about women getting pregnant fairly quickly after miscarriage. My husband and I tried for a year before we got the first pregnancy and loosing that baby made us feel like it would be another whole year before we got pregnant again. But, for me, I was very fertile after the miscarriage. We concieved 7 weeks after the miscarriage.
I hope this gives someone out there some hope if they are dealing with a miscarriage.
I posted earlier on this link, so I decided to follow up. My husband and I decided to start trying two weeks after my miscarriage. At four weeks after the miscarriage I took a pregnancy test and it showed up positive. I was SO disappointed when I found out that my levels were still showing up from my miscarriage ( I had a D&C done on April 9th). I just want people to know that can happen because I thought I was starting a new pregnancy and then my period started. My docter had been monitoring my HCG levels since the positive test, and that is the only way I knew that this was NOT a second miscarriage.
There is a reason why the Dr's say to wait. I want a baby so bad and know of people who have had successful pregnancies after getting pregnant only weeks after a miscarriage. So anything is possible. As far as me and my hubbie, we are back at the starting line. I purchased a clear blue easy monitor (expensive, but I have heard they are worth it) and we will be trying this month.
Miscarriages are so emotional. Just hang in there!!
Ladies I am so sorry for your loss. I had a mc in August of last year. My dr told me to wait AT LEAST one cycle only to help date the pregnancy better. He said that the next pregnancy would be stressful no matter what, and this would at least help to relieve one stress if you were able to keep track of the date of conception. DH and I did wait one cycle, and I got pregnant the next month. The dr was right- this pregnancy is stressful and I feel like I worry about everything!!! BTW you might want to check out the miscarriages forum, or even better the TTC after miscarriages community. Those ladies are awesome, and the support you get there is GREAT! I posted a link to the TTC forum. Take care of yourselves, and good luck.

I miscarried about three weeks ago and had a D&E done. I was 7W1D pregnant at the time. My docter suggested waiting one cycle but said there is no medical evidence that says you are at a higher risk if you get pregnant even before the first period. But, my docter also said that it is very possible you won't ovulate until after your first period, so keep that in mind and don't get frustrated.
My husband and I decided to wait two weeks after the D&E (like the docter said we needed to) and then ever since we are just seeing how it goes. We aren't stressing about it (yet) but we want a baby SOO bad! We've been trying for years before we got this pregnancy. Good luck to everyone trying after a miscarriage. It is VERY emotional, but good things are to come and just think of how grateful you will be when it does:)
Hi Everyone! I have a miscarriage a little over a month ago. It has been hard because we have been trying for a long time and were so excited to finally conceive. Anyway, my doctor told us to wait a few cycles before we started but my husband and I decided to try not to think about it and if it happens then it happens. Well I am at day 34 after my miscarriage and there are not any signs of my period coming. My cycles are anywhere from 28-38 days. I am scared to take a pregnancy test because even though we said we were not really trying, I want a baby very badly. I heard that your cycle after a miscarriage can be very long, so I am thinking it is just that. I am tired like before, but it is also very hot, and I am not getting signs of my period which happened last time too. Oh and a little emotional. Cried listening to a commercial on the radio today. Any advice would be helpful or other stories?
Thank you all for your responses! I will just try to get myself relaxed and mentally ready, and keeping taking my vitamins. I just started exercising again too, that should help. It is encouraging to hear that women who have gone through this before have healthy children now!
You really cannot prevent a miscarriage in the sense that you're taking vitamins and exercising. Women miscarry because of low progesterone or because of faulty egg/sperm. There's nothing you did to cause your miscarriage! Just keep taking a prenatal everyday, monitor your fertility and it'll be perfectly fine to get pregnant right away.
I got pregnant after my miscarriage after the first period. My daughter was born chunky and healthy and is now 19 months old!
Trust your doctor! Your body is an amazing thing and can do amazing things.
I've went through 4 miscarriages and everytime, my pregnancy Dr. and my family Dr. both said to wait 2-3 months to make sure that your body's back on track and to let your uterus shrink back down and give your cervix a rest, but I have also read that there is no reason to wait.
Unless your doctor specifically said to wait for medical purposes there isn't a reason that you shouldn't be able to start trying right away without any complications. I got pregnant within 6 weeks after my miscarriage without even trying and now have a healthy 10 month old daughter. There is another woman on this forum that got pregnant within 3 weeks after her miscarriage and has a very healthy little boy to show for it now. Like NicMom said its up to you how long you feel you need to wait.
Your Dr. is right everything I have read suggests that there is no physical risk to getting pregnant soon after a mc. Some people end up getting pregnant weeks after a mc and some wait. I think every person is different. When I had a mc last year I tried right away for three months. I was so stressed out thinking I had to get pregnant that it ended up being a horrible experience for me and my husband. After that we decided to take a break over the summer. I'm glad we took the break. Now that we are trying again it's fun and not full of anxiety for either of us.
As far as how long you should wait I don't think anyone can answer that for you. It's something that you and your husband will have to feel comfortable with. Good luck and dont forget to have fun!
