OT: does anyone have knowledge of eating disorders?

i posted this in the eating disorders community, but i haven't gotten a response. a friend suggested i try posting here so i figured it wouldn't hurt. please, no one judge me or tell me to see someone. i just want the simple facts if anyone has knowldge of this topic.

after i eat my belly becomes bloated below my belly button, where my intestines are. i try to take gas medicine but it doesn't help much. ive become obsessed with this, as i am a thin, toned girl but i HATE the fact that i become bloated.

if it gets bad enough or ive eaten a lot the night before and i know it'll happen once it's digested, i take a laxative. i take phillips milk of magnesia, as it's not harsh or a stimulant. i only take a laxative maybe once or twice a week. othertimes i drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day as that will sometimes make me go to the bathroom. after everything in my intestines is gone, my stomach is flat like i want it to be.

is taking laxatives once or twice a week mean i have an eating disorder? i know people tell me i see things in the mirror that arent there. but i can't help it. it depresses me and my mind is consumed with whether or not i am bloated. i had a baby 5 months ago and i think that contributes the my self consciousness. but i am lucky to have my body back. i know that. i just think if i would stop being bloated i'd be happy.

i think i might be on the verge of an eating disorder but not actually have one. i dont eat during the day, but i always eat a lot at night. and then if its too much i take a laxative the next day. or drink a lot of coffee. oftentimes after i eat i feel guilty like i lost control and gave in. a friend of mine told me taking laxatives is a form of bulemia but idk if that is true. also if i had an eating disorder i wouldn't be so open to talk about it right?

would prescription meds given to me by a doctor solve the problem of me being bloated?

again; please no one judge me or tell me anything mean. i just want the facts about this.

hi there:

my sister suffered with severe anorexia for years and still struggles with the feelings on a daily basis even though she is now healthy...so I understand the anxiety that body image and food can cause a person.

it sounds like you are very self aware and already know that some of the behaviors you're relying on are not healthy.  Using laxatives after eating is a form of bulimia.  Laxatives are really only for occasional use when constipated but I understand that they are giving you comfort right now and keeping the anxiety at bay.

The only thing is laxatives can create a "lazy" colon. Which means it will take more and more of them to get the same effect because your colon will stop doing what it can do on its own so you don't want to create a separate health issue for yourself!

I totally understand you hating the bloating thing.  I get that a lot myself!  Are you drinking enough water?  Drinking enough water can help with the bottomless pit feeling!  Also..try cooking veggies so they are lightly steamed instead of raw.  And I wouldn't hesitate to talk to a doctor and maybe even a nutritionist about things you can eat to minimize bloating and also to feel fuller with the right amount of food (I also def. think eating throughout the day rather than all at night would help too...it will give your body much more time to digest things slowly rather than having things get all backed up at once!).  Finally, you may want to consider acupuncture for the bloating and the anxious thoughts about your body in general.  I've had great success with acupuncture for all sorts of issues.

I think you can do this!!

Well when you feel comfortable with your eating and are happy and continue your eating pattern/plan then you can do it... You can do this :) Cause ima help you.. Cause we'e gonna get better together.

Like I said, little and often and eat the 3 main meals with Ariana, cause otherwise she  might have problems and not wanna eat herself! Soo

Also You will be MORE bloated when you DONT eat, than when you DO eat! So Eating more (Little often) = Less Bloatin :)

thanks yall!! well i ate some yesterday...grilled chicken during the day; it helped a little at night but i still ate more than i should have cause i was still soo hungry. im just a bottomless pit....i ought to look into appetite suppressants haha.
but anyways i know i SHOULD flush the laxatives down the toilet...but i can't. they are the only thing giving me comfort right now; i take comfort in the fact that if i do get bloated i can take them. they are the only thing letting me eat right now; without them i wouldn't wanna eat a single thing for fear id get bloated again.
i really dont wanna see someone...they'll just make me stop taking the laxatives and then DH will be all on board with what they are saying and make me get rid of them.
ughh i feel if i dont take it past laxatives i'm okay right now.. i mean they are saline im not taking a stimulant.just milk of magnesia..i think thats the best kind you can take.

For IBS they can either Medicate you OR change your diet...

I was on Miralax which is a stool softener.  I know the it made me cramp really bad and half the time I couldn't go to the bathroom anyways. So I quit taking it. If you do have IBS they'll do a stool softener or laxative if you don't go to the bathroom regularly, and I didn't. I wasn't comfortable with taking a laxative everyday because I felt like it would mess me up worse. Bloating is only one symptom of IBS and usually you either have diarrhea or you're constipated. If you go regularly then you probably don't have IBS and it's just trapped gas or you ate a lot.

Yes, it sounds like you might have an eating disorder - only a dr can diagnose it though.

BTW:  bloating can be caused by sensitives and even allergies to certain foods.  You might try eliminating certain foods from your diet for 1-2 weeks to see if you notice a difference (wheat-based products, and dairy are 2 main food types that can cause bloating in some people)

Not everyone with disorders hides and runs from them. They do speak out... BDD sufferers speak out... because they worry.... LOL.
I suffer from IBS as well... which isnt nice with Anorexia... and my gooodnesss does that make you bloat...

Flush the Laxatives down the toilet! And depending on how long you've gone on like this depends now on the size of your stomach. I have the stomach of a 8 yr old! Its shrunk and is going to take YEARS to get back to normal! I cant eat a big portion of food.. EVER I havent had breakfast in 4 yrs! My stomach is toooo small to handle a breakfast I have to be awake 4 hhrs before I can eat. Or I will get cramps and cant move.. :(

Your stomach may have shrunk... but you kinda have to force yourself and then go.. thats enough, because the reason you may not feel full is bordem eating... So if you set up an eating plan, say like a Banana and Weetabix for Breakie at 9am.... 12pm a Sandwich and some Milk... 3 pm chocolate and some strawberries 5pm a dinner with Ariana (A smal portion) because if she sees you not eating she will think she doesnt need too then you'll have problems... 7pm a coffee and a snack or something... make sure you have your last thing to eat around 9pm. And dont drink anything stimulating an hr before you go to bed...

(Just a rough guideline of what I was told to do)... Also have breakfast lunch and dinner with Ariana... and then just play keep yourself busy dont let yourself get bored... :)

Well maybe you could see your doctor about some bloating meds because the laxatives may be doing you more harm than good. You might have IBS, I have it and I'm pretty much always bloated. But even though it's hard you need to eat some during the day. When you eat at night it causes you to bloat and pack on more weight because you generally are less active at night. Unfortunately, I think all of us obsess over our bodies...it's depressing. :(

thanks yall! i really appreciate the info and compliments. actually i hate those swim suit pictures i posted a long time ago. haha
but i have tried eating small throughout the day and its almost harder. if i eat something its hard for me to stop eating. i have an insatiable appetite. thats another problem...im never full. so i guess i feel more in control if i dont eat throughout the day, because if i eat little meals i am more tempted to eat again...whereas if i dont eat at all and i dont have food in front of me its easier to avoid the temptation.
idk about the disorder; i dont isolate myself from friends or anything. not even close; i am always social. im not afraid of being made fun of or anything like that.
the bloating is there; i dont think my mind is playing tricks. i think its probably minor to other people but even minor isn't okay with me when it comes to my body; if i can do something about it i obsess over it.

I agree with the other Heather you look so great I wish I looked like you =)

Being a new mom is hard.  Even though I am only 5lbs away from my prebaby weight I still have stretch marks and look a lot softer than before and I am struggling some with my body image.  But, I look at my son... and I think about how he is going to veiw me when he is older.  He inspires me to be healthy, be happy, and not to be too hard on myself (I am a perfectionist in every aspect it's good and bad but I don't want him to be so down on himself).  So, that is all I meant at the end of my last post when I said for yourself and your daughter =)

I agree with all of these ladies and you know I really admire you for coming on here for help! Not many people will ask for help when it comes to things like this.
Just because you acknowledge it and are open doesn't mean that you don't have a problem though. It's ok...it does happen to the best of us.
I was bulimic in high school and college, I acknowledged it and was absolutely miserable! I always fear that it will come back on me after my baby is born. There isn't anyone that knows about it, except my husband. The only way he found out was cuz I would buy laxatives and put them in an old advil bottle. For a long time I didn't take them but still held on to them and he gave his friend 2 b/c he had a headache...then I had to tell him what they were and I felt terrible!
Anyway, it's best to get help now before it gets to run your life. It's all you'll ever think about and it takes a little part of you away. It's best to eat healthy meals through out your day instead of binging at the end of the day...that will not help your bloating. I've heard women having a tough time with bowels after the birth of their children, so mention it to your doctor. I've seen your pics hun and I've never seen someone look so great and amazing so soon after the birth of their baby!

All of these ladies gave really good information, but I wanted to add that since you don't eat all day your body is going into starvation mode which causes extreme bloating.  Have you ever seen pictures of those poor little starving kids from africa that have all of their bones sticking out with big, bloated tummies?  Have you tried just eating 5 very small meals through out the day?  Lots of fruits and veggies to help your digestion?  This also keeps your metabolism reved up.  Maybe that would help your bloating?  I am all about being thin and toned I too was that way before pregnancy and almost back.  I also understand what you mean about seeing things that are not there.  I have thought I was so called "fat" all my life.  Until I got pregnant LOL.  I have always been obsessed with dieting and nutrition.  But, I get low blood sugar and cannot go without eating every few hours...  I will faint.  You should try the healthy way for yourself and your daughter it may help  =)

Ellop :)...

Taking Laxitives can be the start of a Type of Bulimia. Bulimia is where you make your self loe weight by either making your self sick with either your fingers down your throat or taking laxitives, This will start off a few time a week, then become a few times a day... and can make you seriously ill... Seriously... Both Bulimia and Anorexia can also have an impact and stop you ovulating...

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) people get mixed up and assume you have it... and say you dont have an eating disorder, you have BDD or the other way round. But Yes, BDD is where you see things that are not really there... and no one else can see... this is a mental illness... and can lead to an eating disorder such as Anorexia and or Bulimia.. it can also lead to OCD..  it's NOT a vainity thing, so if people turn around and think you're being vain... tell them to F off!! You cannot physically help it... its part of the illness where you constantly look in mirrors and stuff... this caan also lead to serious depression. I know you dont want too... but pleaase dont do what I did and suffer in silence... I became seriously ill because I hid my anorexia I had to terminate last year because of it!! I've had BDD since I was 11 and Anorexia since I was 12. My BDD triggered off my Anorexia... I was 5 stone Novemeber last year...

This will help understand BDD...http://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/  Body_dysmorphic_disorder

(Take out the spaces)

But in my experience, yes it does sound like you're starting to get an eating disorder, it sounds like Bulimia as well... both can be seriously dangerous, if you stop eating all together and develop anorexia as well... then your muscles and everything will start eating themselves... also... the less you eat the more you'll bloat, because what your muscles are doing to themselves will make you fat believe it or not. I mean look at the people in Africa and third world countries... they hardly eat and they have pot bellies and look really bloated.. its because they starv and their muscles and organs start to eat themselves... you can also become infertile.

The BEST and most IMPORTANT thing you should do, is to go to your doctor... and see your options, I dont know if there is medication to stop you from bloating... (That might be from the BDD that you see bloating) and they can help you in EVERYWAY they can, I actually promise, with all my heart they will do everything they can... and so will I to help you.

Your bloating also might be caused by IBS? have you been constipated at all... or anything like that (When not taking laxatives?) Lack of eating can also make this worse... and make you bloat.. You could try eating fruit and bran and see if this helps with the bloating?? I also advise you eat LITTLE and OFTEN... like when pregnant instead of 3 meals a day... make it 6 small ones... like a slice of toast and an apple here and a bowl of cereal there and things... also drink milk... helps. And find foods that you like and enjoy and spread that out during the day as well..
But it sounds like the start of Bulimia!

I am ALWAYS here if you need to talk. And I have and still am in your shoes and know how you feel. Please dont be scared.. I can helps! :)

Bulemia is characterized by binging and purging. Basically, you're not eating during the day, so you're probably eating more at night because you feel so hungry. When you take laxatives that is purging, so yes...that's a form of bulemia. Mainly because laxatives are for constipation and not for getting rid of bloat to make your stomach look flat.

I can say that I know what you're going through to an extent. In high school, I had just lost my grandfather who was more like my primary care giver. I wasn't in a healthy relationship with my boyfriend, and when I would feel stressed or overwhelmed...I would stop eating or only eat enough to get by. I felt like I needed to punish myself or sometimes I just felt like I was bigger than I actually was. Other times, I would eat all day and eat even when I knew I was  full. I remember one Thanksgiving I ate until I literally got sick, and then went back to the table and ate more. Then after that, I didn't hardly anything for several days because I felt guilty for eating so much. I know it's not the same exact feeling that you have, but I can relate.

Pregnancy does crazy things to our bodies. I know some days I wake up and I feel like I'm not big enough and then other days I feel like I'm huge. Then once you have your baby, you feel like need to get the baby weight off as quickly as you can.

I think at this point that you need to see your doctor and tell them what is going on and maybe they can offer you some advice or more insight into the situation. It sounds like you have BDD and maybe a mild case of bulemia. Your doctor would be able to tell you for sure if you have these and would be able to help.

Just know that I'm here if you want to talk about it. I really hope that things get better for you!

I do agree with Ivy, not eating all day and binging at night is bad.. its far more unhealthy to eat 1 big meal a day rather then 3 or 4 small ones.

well honestly Rachel I don't know about eating disorder, but it does sound like you have body dysmorphia (where you see your body as being far bigger than it truly is) and that you have some seriously unhealthy habits that could, yes, lead to an eating disorder. I had anorexia in high school and it lasted for several weeks before everyone caught on because I told everyone I was doing a "1000-calorie" diet to get ready for a track meet...I had body dysmorphia where I thought I was HUGE when I was only 120lbs. and considering that I had D boobs, that was absolutely PERFECT for my body shape....but I saw myself as SO FAT because all of my friends were sized 0-2s. It took counseling to get my head back in the right place...and now that I actually AM fat, I struggle with eating all the time because I don't want to go back to where I was with the anorexia...but I can't live fat anymore.

I don't know about getting a prescription from your doctor to solve the bloating I'm sure one exists...but you need to talk to your doctor about what you're feeling and thinking. you don't want to become anorexic, trust me. but it does sound like you may have a mild form of bulemia...I come in and out of bulemia all the time. bulemia doesn't necessarily mean that you vomit but it does mean that you refrain from eating and then binge...and a lot of women DO throw up after they binge, but sometimes it just means not eating all day and then eating a lot at night...which is what I go through a lot too. it's just not healthy. because your body thinks it's starving all day, when you binge at night it hoards all the fat and calories because it's afraid that it's starving....so in fact eating regularly helps....but when you're like you and I, that doesn't help your MIND understand that any better, you know? you think "i feel so fat i'm just not going to eat" but when you get starving at night you think "i didn't eat all day and i'm starving so I'm going to eat".

I'm sorry I wanted to write a nice long tlak with you but my daughter is going to smother my son in hugs if I don't run soon so I'll just leave it at this...yes, what you say worries me. taking the laxitives while not the BEST idea to do regularly isn't all that bad...it's the "not eating all day and then binging at night" that I know from experience (eating disorders counseling) is un healthy.

I'll try to finish what I was going to say later....but i'm going to rescue my son now. talk to your doctor Rachel...you're skinny, and you're beautiful, and healthy..and youw ant to stay that way...don't let your inaccurate self image send you into a spiral of unhealthy habits and self-loathing *hugs*.
