Ovulation and Breastfeeding

Hello All!

I am having a hard time finding information on the net about ovulation and breastfeeding and I thought there might be some people here who could help me.

I am still breastfeeding my son about three times a day (he will be one next month). Once before bed, once in the middle of the night and then once in the morning or I'll pump at work.

A little over a month ago AF returned and my husband and I decided to try for #2. But my ovulation signs are kind of funky. My CM doesn't seem to follow any kind of pattern and it seems like I am experiencing "fertile" CM a few times a week. I know this can't be right.

Is it possible that I'm not ovulating any more and AF last month was a fluke? Could it be hormones that are causing my CM to not follow a pattern?

Any advice or past experience would be great. I went out earlier this week and purchased Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler but so far I haven't found a whole lot about breastfeeding.

Sorry this is so long.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Christine

Thanks Michele.  I appreciate the feedback!

I am starting to chart.  Since my CM has been all over the place, I haven't really been marking it - I thought maybe I was reading it wrong.  But, I guess not!!

Thanks again!

Well, I have breastfed all 5 of my kids.  That does delay ovulation but once it starts, you should be fine to start trying and should be okay to get pregnant again.

The fertile CM is the EWCM.  Sorry, but I wasn't sure if you knew that.  It is very normal to experience several fertile patches in any one cycle.  Once ovulation has taken place, your CM should dry up for the most part.

Have you thought about charting?  If you didn't have any problems getting pregnant before, that is probably not necessary.

Just don't get impatient.  It may take a cycle or two before you get regular cycles again.  It may take even longer.  I stopped breastfeeding with this last one about 5 or 6 months ago.  My cycles were extremely long until just recently.  They are just now getting back to what they were before I had her.  She is almost 14 months old now.
