Pregnant with PCOS..when to stop taking metformin?

hello,
im currently 7w6d pregnant with my first...last nov. 06 i was dx with PCOS and i have been taking metformin ever since, for me to get pregnant i had to go see a reproductive specialist, who also dx me with high prolactin levels and was put on dostinex twice a week,i got pregnant with gonal-f injections and ovedril to incude ovulation plus an IUI, i was just recently released by my specialist who dont me to stop taking dostinex and yesterday i went for my first prenatal app. with my new OBGYN, when i asked her about stopping metformin she says i can stop taking it now, she says once im pregnant PCOS is irrelevant, now im a little worried should i stop it or should i still continue till im further along in the pregnancy? any input will be helpful! im also taking progesterone gel till im about 9 weeks and than i was told to stop..what do you think about this?
Thank you.

Hello,

I agree with your ob/gyn.  You should stop the Metformin.  It is thought to be safe, but it is not acting in any beneficial way with respect to the pregnancy.

Assisted reproduction patients receive progesterone to replace the function of the corpus luteum.  In a spontaneous pregnancy the placenta will take over the progesterone producing function from the corpus luteum around 35 to 47 days post ovulation.  A standard recommendation is 12 weeks, but this is certainly over cautious.  Talk with your physician about it and see what they say.  Stopping at 9-10 weeks should do no harm.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
