Hospital Process

Can anyone who has had a baby vaginally please tell me the process of everything the staff does when you first go in up to when you can leave?
Like, when you first go in do they check your blood pressure/weight/ect? Do they put you in a wheel chair? Do they make you pee in a cup for testing and put on a hospital gown? How long do you have to stay in a hospital gown? After you have the baby can you wear like PJs or something or do you have to stay in hospital gown? I want to know all the little stuff that nobody tells you lol

I delivered at a birthing center, we went in a little more than 12 hours after my water broke and active labor started because we were waiting for contractions to be very regular at less than 5 minutes apart. I didn't have to be triaged - they knew I was in hard labor, and so did I. So it was tough to talk to the admitting nurse through the contractions - but I had preregistered so they roomed me right away. Unlike many places I stayed in the same room the whole time - labored, delivered, and had my two days of postpartum care in the same spot. Much easier on everyone I think. I was not weighed at any point during my stay. Never sat in a wheelchair the whole time I was there, never gave a urine sample, never started an IV (they tried to insist but I refused and my midwife backed me up on the grounds that I wasn't getting any meds and didn't have any pressing reason for an open line). My blood pressure was checked at intervals during and immediately after labor, probably twice the next day - but it stayed stable so they weren't worried. My midwife used intermittent fetal monitoring - I wasn't strapped to a continuous monitor because I wanted to be able to move, and it doesn't improve outcomes according to evidence-based research. I got out of my clothes pretty quickly as I wanted to get in the tub for a while - when I got cold and wanted to get out they gave me a gown to put on. My cervix was only checked a few times when I asked for updates - my midwife knew where I was at by the way I was moving and breathing, and she knew when I was at full dilation by the way I sounded. I moved around the room as much as I needed to in heavy labor and delivered on hands and knees on the bed. I think I stayed in a (clean) gown for probably the first several hours after delivery since I was napping on and off, labor was 21 hours total and we were pretty wiped out. But when I was ready to get up and my little one was sleeping soundly in his daddy's arms I got up, showered, and dressed in my own clothes. We stayed a little over 48 hours after birth because of moderate jaundice but every bit of bili treatment was done in the room - they didn't take him away to the nursery for anything even when they did blood sugar checks and gave him his first shot. He stayed with me to bond and breastfeed, his pediatrician came to check him out before discharge, I got connected with a lactation consultant to help with my questions while we got used to the process (who was beyond instrumental in saving my breastfeeding experience from certain doom - but that's another story) and I got checked out by my midwife at least once a day after delivery in addition to the nursing staff checking on me and delivering my Tylenol and Colace (yes, they hand out stool softeners like candy - they really want you to move your bowels before you go home to make sure you're not too constipated ESPECIALLY if you've had any narcotic painkillers but even if you haven't it's still a concern). All in all I had a good experience but definitely looking forward to having a home birth this time around.

I delivered in my own clothes and wasn't weighed or anything. The checker my dilation and gave me the gas and then broke my waters and I was pushing. I had to walk to the birthing room myself and then after she was out and they had delivered the placenta I was allowed to shower immediately

They gave my babies their baths a few hours after delivery. They come in quite often and checked on us both throughout the night. The next morning a pediatrician came and checked on the baby as well as my Dr. They both have to be part of releasing us. A little later a staff member came with paperwork to fill out regarding birth cert stuff. Then a bit later they took the baby for a few minutes for hearing tests. They also ask you about a shot and whether or not you want to give it to your baby at that time and go over that info. Then after a bit the nurse comes in with your discharge info and you are on your way home.

For me they walked me to my room, had me change into the hospital gown, then checked my blood pressure. I don't think they weighed me or made me pee in a cup. They hooked me to an iv and then measured me. With my first I was induced so they started the pitocin and a couple of hours later broke my water. The second I was in labor and my water broke on its own. With my first I had an episiotomy and was so swollen I had to have a cathedor, once they emptied my bladder and removed it I was able to clean up and change. I recommend having a nightgown since they will need to check you often. I also wore the provided net underwear things the first day so I wouldn't ruin my own. The next day I showered again and was able to leave.

They bring those papers in usually that day or the next but they leave them with you so you have time to fill them out without rushing.

When does a person usually come in to do all the paper work like babys name and stuff for his birth certificate and social security?

Either the day you deliver or the day after you can shower as long as they give you the ok. I had an epidural with my first and was able to shower a few hours later. You can change into your own clothes whenever but they check to see if your uterus is shrinking like it should about three times a day so be prepared to pull pants down if you decide to wear pants.

They check for dilation by inserting fingers into your cervix and that determines how dilated

if you go in cus u feel your in labor they have you in a room monotoring your contractions and the baby if they see your in labor they take you to your room where they start an i.v nd check you for dialation as you progress in dialation they prepare the room for baby arrival its annoying when they check for dialation and your contracting but its not bad good luck

Robe of your own but better to Benin some sort of gown cause they still check you after baby is born. And they don't put you in a wheel chair until after baby is born.

I had to pee in a cup when i got ther. They check your blood pressure and hook your belly up to a monitor to measure contractions and baby's heart rate. Once they know you're in real labor they have you put the gown on and you can bring a little nighty or

If you're in active labor they most likley will put you in a wheel chair and take you to a room

When I was scheduled for my induction when I got there they weighed me, & signed me in. Then they took me up to labor & delivery and I got my iv started. Mine ended up in a c section but I am sure you can change into your normal clothes once the epidural wears off, if you get one.
