Taking the pill after tubal

I recently gave birth and got my tubes tied. I want to know if it is possible to take the pill to regulate my cycle, as well as to lessen the cramps and the bleeding. I have had two periods since I had my son the first one was short and sweet but the second one was awful. I had to change every hour. I have never had cramps or extremely heavy bleeding but now I have both. I don't even get any relief pain wise until I take four pills. I don't want to get into to much detail but its bad. A friend of mine had the same problems and is now taking Levora. Please help.

Hello,

If you suffer from dysmenorrhea (painful menses) or irregular menses, yes, the birth control pill can be used to help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve dysmenorrhea.  In your case, having had a tubal ligation, the indication would not be for birth control but for the symptoms you describe and that is fine.

I'm not sure what you mean by taking four pills.  You should take it as you otherwise would: one pill at the same time each day.  I suggest you see your ob/gyn to discuss these issues in greater detail.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
