Thyroid test results during pregnancy - please help!!

Hi!  I am 26 weeks pregnant and and have had a somewhat complicated pregnancy.  I found out that I am hetero for the Prothrombin gene mutation and also compound hetero MTHFR.  So since 12 weeks on I've been on 60 mg lovenox, baby aspirin, prenatals, extra calcium and high folic acid.  I get monthly ultrasounds for monitoring.  At my last ultrasound this past Monday my Perinatologist just wanted to check my thyroid (not sure why).  He ran a Free T3 and Free T4 test.

My results came back normal but one of them was on the low side of normal.  My results were:

T3:  2.4 (normal was either 2.4 or 2.8 to 5.2)
T4:  1.0 (normal was  .6 to 1.6)

He did not test my TSH.  He wanted to prescribe me a low dose of Synthoid - 75mcg but I am very concerned about this.  I called back with a million questions because I don't really understand what's wrong with my thyroid and the nurse told me that it was "normal" but on the low side of normal and he just wanted to fine tune my system.  I don't want to take more medicine with what I'm already taking especially medicine that could have lots of side effects.

Do I really need to take medicine based on these test results?
Do these test results mean I have hypo or hyper thyroidism?
Do I need to do this for my baby or should I seek more testing?

I am so confused!  I want what's best for me and my baby but don't want to take more meds if I don't need them especially ones that can have so many side effects.

Please give me your advice!!!!

Thanks!

Stacy

Hi!
Synthroid is safe during pregnancy, but honestly, it may be overkill in your case.
With thyroid values in the normal range, you have neither hyper nor hypo thyroidism, although you doctor would be treating hypothyroidism.  One possibility it to recheck the levels in a few weeks (including a TSH --that tells you how hard your body is working to get your thyroid to produce hormone).  If your levels are dropping, then start meds, if your levels improve, then don't.  Lovenox injections are no piece of cake, so I understand your desire to avoid more medications.  Also, by now, your baby's own thyroid is functioning, so you don't need to take Synthroid for the baby.  You probably SHOULD have your platelets checked if you haven't already though.
Good luck!

I think your doctor wanted you to have enough Thyroid Hormon since your test results were at lower end of normal range.  I have Thyroid problem and need to take 150mg Synthoid during my pregnancy. Synthoid is safe to take during the pregnancy. Don't worry and good luck with your pregnancy.
