Blood type can cause jaundice. If the rh factor is negative in you and positive in baby they give a shot to prevent this. In second and later pregnancies your blood can attack baby's red blood cells which causes a bilirubin build-up.
The bilirubin build up is really the cause of jaundice and has many causes.
Difference in blood type can be a cause, but isn't what jaundice IS. Jaundice is when the levels of bilirubin in the blood are too high so then the bilirubin is deposited in the skin causing the yellow color, because the liver hasn't filtered the bilirubin fast enough. But the many different things that CAN cause jaundice, don't necessarily cause jaundice in everyone. It's more about liver function.
It Usually Happens When They Are Born But It Goes Away It Has Nothing To Do With Blood Type Just Like MomMaggie Said.
Ok i was very confused about the comment the lady posted to that post so i had to ask. Cause my cousin (doesnt have kids) said jaundice isnt related to the blood type. So me hearing two different things caused me to ask. Thanks
Not exactly. Jaundice is when the skin looks yellow and it can be caused by different things. One of them is incompatibility between mommy and baby's blood, but it's not likely to be something you need to worry about. It can just be physical and go away within a few days. It could be an obstruction, liver disease or other blood problems which is more likely one of the problems with the baby in nicu. But having a rare blood type does not mean that your baby will have problems.
But how can my kids not get it when they have completely different blood types from me and their dad?
