I had a BHCG done last night and the results were a 1. I was wondering if it was just very early in my pregnancy or if i wasnt pregnant at all. i wasnt due to ovulate until today.
Hi!
The BEST advice I can give you is to see a genetic counselor and a high risk OB specialist in your next pregnancy. (You can see a genetic counselor BEFORE the pregnancy, certainly).
We usually quote about a 5% recurrence risk for most congenital anomalies. Or in plain language a 5% chance that the "water on the brain" could happen in another pregnancy.
That risk is pretty low--95% chance that it DOESN'T happen again.
But a genetic counselor could help you discover if this is a condition that runs in families-- yours or his--and determine if the risk is more than that.
As far as comeption, that should not be a problem that would be caused by a termination, so you should be able to have more pregnancies if you wish.
You will be at risk for weakening of the cervix (I have seen this TOO MANY times!)
and you will want to be sure your doctor watches your cervix with ultrasound to determine whether you will need a cerclage (this is like a drawstring around your cervix to hold the baby in).
Also! They can do ultrasounds as early as 12-13 weeks that will tell a lot about whether the baby is likely to have a birth defect, and you should be sure to ask for that!
Good luck, and sorry about your loss, this is a VERY VERY hard decision for a mom to have to make!
