ok so some of you already know because of the may 09 forum but i got home from my operation on monday around 1:30 pm i had a cerclage put in place all went well so far, i'm a little sore still but mostly from the spinal they gave me, we got to hear the heartbeat it was 155 b4 and after operation. i go for my check up on cerclage on nov 11th. :)

Hi -

A TAC stands for Transabdominal cerclage. It is a type of cerclage used for women when the vaginal cerclage does not work. It is also  used when women have a shorter than normal cervix to begin with. Instread of having the cerclage placed by going through the vagina, a bikini cut incision is placed on the abdomen, and the cerclage is placed where the cervix and the uterus connect, causing it to be placed higher than going through the vagina. The downside of the TAC is the longer recovery time than the TVC, and you have to have a c-section for delivery. The c-section part does not bother me, because I would have to get one anyway. I chose the TAC over the TVC because with my other pregnancies I was never able to make it to term, although it did bring me to 30 weeks and 32 weeks after the loss of my 1st son. Both my daughter and son did amazing and had relatively short stays in the NICU. This will be my last pregnancy and my last shot to see if I can go full term, so I chose the TAC.

thanks ashiepooh and dara, my doctor didn't know if i actually went into labor early just becasue of the ttts, which was very possible for if it was my cervix as well but at 21 after the amnioreduction was done i was not eligible for a cerclage due to bulging membranes i gave birth a few hours later, but so far i'm 14wks and my cervix is fine for now hasn't started opening or ne thing. but thank you guys and i'm hoping for a healthy pregnancy. if you only 2 cm it may help but could cause you to go into labor as well. but dara, what is a tac?

I have a short cervix, and with my son I was fully dialated at 5 months, delievered him at 35 weeks, with my daughter we don't know when I dialated, but had her at 34w1d....And i'm 21w5d now and dialted to 2 already!  My doctor doesn't think a cerclage would help me at all

During my first pregnancy I was found to be dilated at 18 weeks with my water bag bulging, the dr. performed an emergency cerclage, but unfortunately, I ended up rupturing my membranes at 22 weeks and delivered my son at 23 weeks, he paseed when he was 7 months old. My dr. told me that ususally when your cervix is already shortened and dilated, the success that the cerclage will hold until close to term is not that great. For my next pregancy, I got the cerclage when I was 16 weeks pregnant, and delivered at 32 weeks. My third pregnancy, I got the cerclage at 10 weeks, and delivered at 30 weeks after my water bag broke at 29 weeks. This time around I opted for a TAC because I have a short cervix to begin with and since they can place the TAC higher up, it works good for people like me with a short cervix. I hope and pray I can make it to full term baby this time around. I am currently 28 weeks.

thanks you guys and avanaar, i lost twins in march due to incompatent cervix and ttts, i delivered at 21 wks for my last pregnancy.

I am glad everything went well. I had the trans vaginal cerclage in previous pregancies and you seem to recover fairly quickly. I have a transabdominal cerclage for this pregancy and I must say the recovery period was much longer due them going through the abdomen to place the cerclage.

I'm glad your surgery went well and you're recovering!

I'm sorry that I don't know why you had to have the cerclage ...was your cervix dilating an issue in previous pregnancies?
