bleeding after sex at 11 weeks pregnant

2 nights ago my husband and I were having sex (which was the first time in about a week) and afterwards I turn the light on and he starts freakin out because he has blood on him. I ran to the bathroom to wipe myself and noticed I had quite a bit of bright red bleeding. I told him we needed to go to the ER now! When we walked into the hospital I could feel the blood running out. I thought I was having another miscarriage like the one I had back in September. The Dr ended up drawing blood and giving me a pelvic exam and trying to get heart tones on the monitor which they couldn't find and about an hour later he comes in saying everything looks fine. I called my ob the next morning and they were shocked that the ER didn't do a Sonogram after they couldn't get the heart beat. My question is, has this ever happened to anyone? And do you think I may have lost the baby? I have a sono to check tomorrow morning but I'm so anxious I would like a little peace of mind.

The same thing happened to me on July 23rd 2010 only i had cramping about half an hour later the cramping wasn't that bad then the bleeding started to get a lil' heavier but then slowed afterward and i passed 2 clots at separate times they were both about 2 inches in size they were just like blood filled clots they weren't grayish or pinkish just a very dark red color and we went to the clinic too searched for the baby's heartbeat did a pregnancy test we couldn't find the baby's heartbeat the nurse thought it was still too early because i was about 11 weeks pregnant than and the pregnancy test was still positive. I'm very worried that i lost the baby from having sex with my boyfriend i haven't told anyone yet about it because i'm not sure if i truly miscarried this is my second pregnancy and i have not had a miscarriage once in my life and not sure how it is and what its like.

Hi!
I too am surprised that they didn't do an ultrasound.  I think that would be the standard of care in most communities.  You don't mention how far along you are, but if the pregnancy is less than 12 weeks, it is very difficult to find fetal heart tones, and almost always requires an ultrasound to confirm fetal viability (or rule out miscarriage).

ANY bleeding during pregnancy is by definition a threatened miscarriage.  If your cervix was closed when he did the pelvic exam, that is a good sign that things are not hopeless.  Back in my training days 20 years ago, that was good enough, but nowadays, I too would expect an ultrasound!

Good luck! I hope everything is OK!
