Hey I'm also O-negative.  One of your parents does not have to be O-negative.  It can also be that one of your parents is O-positive and the other is negative.  For example, if your mother is O-positive and your father is A-negative, than you can be O-positive, O-negative, A-positive or A-negative.  So you can get the type ( O, A, B, or AB) from one parent and the Rh factor (positive or negative) from the other parent.  It is also possible to have the exact same blood type as one of your parents.

If you never got anti-d and your baby has a positive blood type, your body would begin building up antibodies that would attack your baby.  Most of the time, this does not affect a first baby because the antibodies are not built up yet, but future babies would likely miscarry.  The anti-d prevents these antibodies from building up.

Once you give birth, they will test the baby's blood.  If the baby is negative, like you, nothing has to be done, but if the baby is positive, you will need another shot.  You will continue to get these shots with each future pregnancy and after each if the baby is positive.
