Thanks for that Star3789 :) nice to know I definitely wasn't being a b****. I know what smoking during pregnancy does to babies. My little brother has all sorts of health complications that I don't because when my mother was pregnant with me she quit. The effects are going to be similar when smoking and breastfeeding. I never called the OP a selfish, horrible mother. I said that selfish decisions will be regretted later when your baby is not so perfect andhealthy. A few puffs of a cigarette here and there aaren't likely to do any real damage. But if you barely smoke then why not give it up altogether? Because you clearly aren't addicted :)

I read all these comments and Lucymarie1991 wasn't rude to anyone, she simply answered the question honestly.  She didn't call names or say anything derogatory unlike u.  If that makes anyone feel like a bad mother than they should rethink their choices.

To call someone uneducated when you have never met me or know what I do is an ignorant comment coming from yourself,  so many ppl have to put ppl down for asking a question,  yes you answered it but had to make her feel bad for being a smoker! . Have you ever had an addiction? , probably not so your comment makes you uneducated and ppl like you probably ***** 24/7 about everything around you because you think your perfect wake up and worry about educating yourself on the addiction to nicotine and be a little more tactful with your comments

I don't understand the people who are saying it's fine because there mum did it with them and there fine that's crazy.everyone knows smoking is bad for you and has sooo many health risks so when your with child or breastfeeding your child why would you want to make that go in your child's system. Avoid smoking all together while pregnant or breastfeeding in fact why not just try quit for good it's horrible and lead by example for your kids I believe.

So the person who is right is caittt. I have researched and is on ************. and to my understanding is a credible source. So basically feed, smoke one, wait 3 hours and then feed again.

They say some will be in the breastmilk but the breastmilk would still be better than formula!

Best thing to do for the health of you and your baby is ask your doctor. No one on this forum can give you a truly educated answer unless they r a doctor themselves and still I wouldn't accept tht advice as valid because u never know for sure. The best we can do is give you our experiences and opinions or experiences from ppl we know. Do not leave the health of yourself and baby in the hands of a bunch of strangers. Based off some of these comments I still wouldn't feel satisfied taking the advice. Talk to your doc hun...dnt base your decision on us. You can also look up facts. For stuff like this i believe it's best to go to your doctor....tht way when your doc gives you facts, you can be confident about your decision!  Good luck mama n dnt let anyone make you feel bad about your decision....If doc says it's ok then ok...There will still be ppl out there judging your decision but thts their opinion..which is not needed!

The le leche league says you have to smoke upwards of 20 cigs a day for it to affect your breast milk.  Several other medical websites say the same thing. They recommend you wait 90 minutes after so your clothes air out. Your baby will not be addicted to nicotine of you only take a few drags...  you should go to the le leche league website! It has tons of great info on there!  Good luck momma! Your not a horrible person for smoking a little. Don't do it inside your house though. Sheesh people are so judgemental these days! Love thy neighbor ppl!  We're here for support!

Your supposed to wait 90 minutes after a cigarette to pump or feed .. that's what the lactation nurses told me.

Not ranting thinking I'm a know it all. She asked was it bad for baby. I answered. There are too many people who choose to do something for their own wants and needs and then justify it by saying 'oh well my friend/sister/cousin/acquaintance did it so my baby will be totally fine' if you don't want to hear the side that says it isn't good then don't ask the question on a public forum.

I witnessed my little sister getting weined of my mother's breast milk when my mom smoked a packa day and she had no "withdrawls" whatsoever. Neither did me or my 2 older sisters. Guess what they give you norco at the hospital afterbirth and say the baby only gets a trace amount if you breastfeed. Bet ya didn't know that one. I hope you start ranting to all the other mothers what a bad mother they are to their face at the hospital. Too many girls on here thinking they're a know it all.

The best thing you can do is to ask your doctor. You're not going to get a reliable response from a source, giving you an one sided answer about a "selfish decision".

Yes smoking contaminates breast milk. If you smoke while breast feeding, your baby is at an increased risk for SIDS. Everything you put in your body will be excreted through your breast milk. There is no freebie here.

And comments like that are exactly the reason that people need educating. Nicotine is addictive. Think how addictive it is to a tiny little baby. Think of the withdrawal that baby could potentially go through when they are weaned off breastmilk. Just because you want to justify your selfish decision doesn't mean somebody on the internet should endanger their child because you choose to endanger yours. She has asked how bad it is and if it can affect her baby. I am giving her an answer

I obviously know smoking isn't the same as taking hard drugs. Just trying to make people think about the fact they will be feeding their precious baby nicotine laced milk.

I wouldn't exactly compare smoking to heroin or coke when it comes to affects on baby when breastfeeding, my mama used to work with drug babies and she would say that smoking when breastfeeding is NOT the same as taking drugs when breastfeeding! That being said it's a good question because I quit smoking when pregnant but was planning to start again afterwards but I'm guessing I won't be smoking for a little while longer!

The nicotine can get into your milk and make baby addicted. Would you take coke or heroin while breastfeeding? No, because it would get into your milk and affect baby. Same reason you wouldn't drink because the alcohol gets into your milk. Everything that you put into your body is shared with your baby. Whilst breastfeeding, your body is still not your own
