Fresh breast milk is good in the fridge for 6 days. Milk that has been frozen and then thawed is good for 24hours in the fridge. There is a medhelp breastfeeding forum you should come check out :)
Thank you that was very helpful information
I nursed my son until he was two years old. I stopped because i had to take strong steroids and antibiotics for a week when i got sick and my doc told me it wasn't safe. I wasn't pumping so by the time the meds were gone so was my milk. Most moms find their milk lasts as long as baby is still nursing. The more they eat, the more you make. It's a really awesome demand-and-supply system.
The first few weeks are hard. Your nipples will be sore and feel raw. You will want to give up. Don't give up. Find a lactation consultant or a breastfeeding support group in your area (check with the hospital you'll deliver at) for tips with positioning and latch issues.
The best thing for your nipples is your own milk. When baby is through nursing, you can hand-express a little more milk. Spread it over your nipples and let it air-dry on there. Better than lanolin, better than artificial creams that you have to remember to wash off before feeding baby again. Spend as much time topless as possible in those first few weeks. The air is your friend.
Most health insurance plans will cover the cost of an electric pump, many hospitals will supply new moms with a manual pump. Call and ask, it's worth finding out what May be covered before you pay for them out of pocket. All i ever used was a Medela manual pump that i think retails for around $30-40, it worked great for me.
Don't give up. Seek out resources to help you. Nursing is an awesome way to bond with your baby and give them the absolute best start they can get. Good luck!!
You can get a free electrical pump from the place you get WIC from
In the fridge it's good for 24hrs in a deep freezer it's good for a year (always date it) pumps go right from $25 to high hundreds and are all very different and don't always work for everyone. I have tried cheap and expensive and was personally not able to pump. Most times baby feeds about 20mins but each baby is different I always did bout ten mins one side ten on the other. Get nipple cream cause it can get painful but using the cream regularly really does help.
