glucose testing

My OB did a sugar test on me 2 weeks ago.  He said that 130 was as high as he wanted me to go.  I was 130 on the dot.  He told me not to eat sweet stuff.  I wasn't big on sweets anyway, but after he said that those are all I wanted and couldn't have.  I went to my endocrinologist today and asked him about it.  He said that some doctors says 130 and others 140.  He said that neither would be a problem as far as he was concerned.  He told me not to worry about it. My question is, what are you all being told on this? 130?140?  When should I be concerend?

I have Gestational Diabetes. I don't want you to get the wrong info so I have to chime in.  All the girls that I know that have it are told to keep their blood sugar UNDER 120. We test 2 hours after each meal and once in the morning. We are all told to limit our CARB intake. My nutritionist said don't even bother looking at the sugar content, what matters is how many TOTAL CARBS you are taking in. Carbs turn into sugar basically. So my advice...limit the carbs that you are taking. It is better to be safe than sorry. For example, if you want to have a cheeseburger and fries, skip the fries and go for vegetables instead. Instead of having a sandwich for lunch, have a big salad with some chicken on it and maybe a glass of milk. You can have potatoes, just don't eat a whole baked potato. Eat half or a quarter of it. And certainly don't have a huge bowl of pasta...that will send your sugars through the roof.

You technically didn't fail according to your doctor's office, but according to mine, you would have gestational diabetes. It is so much better to be safe than sorry. You can always purchase your own blood sugar monitors. They aren't that expensive and the pricking isn't bad at all.

I am a volunteer at a crisis preg. center. I am no expert by any means and I have learned a LOT from other women here on the forum. I just learn tidbits here and there and I hope that they can help others, too! I think being pregnant and going through this has given me insight as well.

Anyway, dont' worry about carbs! Pregnant women have to have 'em for energy. ;-)  (got that info from a nutritionist)

Oh yeah, those levels seem fine to me.....Just wanted to mention the low carb thing in case you were a nervous wreck over it..which at this point you really have no need to be!

I just knew you would have insight on this.  You seem to know a little about everything.  Where did you say you worked at?  A pregnancy center of some sort?

Don't say cut back on my carbs!!!  Anything but that!  That is why the Atkins diet and I didn't get along.  My OB said as long as I didn't have sugar in my urine I was OK.  My endo said that he wouldn't even be concerned about that happening if that is high I was checking.  It is just confusing when you have two doctors telling you stuff.

Oh, and I'm not saying you have GD! I just meant that if you were to get it, it could lead to probs. Sorry! Wanted to clarify.

Gestational diabetes can lead to problems, so try to keep it light. I wish I could offer more insight, but I can't because I don't remember what I was told my levels should be! Sorry!

I think that all OB's have different guidelines...When I was pregnant they tested me at 5 weeks b/c I have a strong family history of diabetes...I failed the 1 hour test with a result of 170....I had to go back for a 3 hour fasting test and my glucose prior to drinking that horrendous syrup was 110 and after the 3 hours was 118...My office used 120 as a guideline so I just made it......Anyway, as long as your Dr. says not to worry, then I would go by what they say......If you are really concerned then just try to cut back on all sugars, which includes carbs, as they convert to sugar once they are absorbed......Best of luck!
