When i was pregnant with my first child...now pregnant with my third, i had terrible pains that made me feel like i was either miscarring or that something was seriously wrong. The pains that i felt were excruciating. I went to the hospital and to the doctors and they both told me that when a person becomes pregnant for the first time their body is either prepared for it or not. If the body is not prepared for the pregnancy then it becomes so by the stretching of the tendons and the ligaments that surround the uterus and cervix.

I hope that this helps because on the good side of things the pains that i had went away after about the first trimester or so...as my body adjusted to the fact that i was pregnant.

I hope that this helps.

I am in my 12th week, but this is my 3rd pregnancy.  I too get a lot of strange pains all over my abdomen and in my chest.  I honestly think this is just something that goes along with pregnancy.  There is also something called "round ligament pain"  that happens.  This is when the ligaments and muscles are stretching to accomodate your uterus growing.  You can get sharp pains, especially when you move or stand up suddenly.  I have been getting these since I first found out, about 5 weeks, I'm not sure why so early but I'm sure that's what I have.  So I wouldn't worry too much, unless you have a constant pain that is getting worse.  Congratulations and good luck to you!

Hi!

You have gotten some good answers from the other moms!  It is VERY common for "stretching pains" to occur during the first trimester, and they can be pretty severe and yet normal.

If my patient complained about this sort of pain, I would get an ultasound to double check that the baby is in the uterus and not the tube, and also, that there is no large cyst on that ovary-----------there SHOULD be a small cyst on one or the other ovary (your corpus luteum cyst which all pregnant ladies have) and that may be the cause. If so, it will get better soon when the cyst goes away at about 12 weeks.  If it is from stretching it will often improve in the later part of the pregnancy as HuntingWife experienced.

Constipation is another frequent culprit! So drink plenty of water and consider stool softeners.  Prunes are a pregnant lady's best friend.

Things to watch for and report to your doctor would be:

bleeding, severe cramping, fever, pain getting worse or unbearable.

By the way, it is safe to take acetominophen for the pain if you like.

Hope this helps!
