hot tubs?

I was just in the hot tub for about 10-15 minutes. And then after I got out my mom started freaking out and told me I was probably going to have a baby with brain damage. I'm wondering if I was in the hot tub long enough to be at risk

It is more dangerous in the beginning of pregnancy and avoiding it then is a good idea. I am 28 weeks and when we go to the pool I go into the hot tub for 5-10 mins and then into the cold pool. The dangerous part of it is because our bodies can sweat to cool down (in pregnancy this process takes quite a bit longer, depending on the woman) and baby can't sweat to cool down. So if you are going to go in the hot tub, definitely talk to your doctor (every doctor/midwife will have a different opinion but try asking for facts) if you are high risk I would say avoid it. Or go in hot tubs where you can control the temperature and if you can't... Have a cold shower or like me go into a pool after to help yours and the babies temperature come down quickly :) good luck!

Thank you! I'm definitely not going to do it again. As soon as I started to feel too hot I got out

Oh, you posted the 23 weeks while I was posting.  Phew.  That is good.  Generally they say to be in less than 10 minutes--  then your body won't reach that high of a temp.  good luck

Well, I'll just give the information on most information sites for pregnancy---  during that 4 to 6 week period of pregnancy, the body heating up as it does when sitting in a hot tub---  after 10 min, the body can reach 102 degrees which can cause hypothermia.  Hypothermia during the time frame can then lead to either miscarriage or neural tube defects affecting the brain and spinal cord.  That is the issue.  I feel like I've seen tattoo mama's posts before and she is farther along than 4 to 6 weeks.

But that is really the information her mom was probably referring to.

10 15 min doesn't seem bad though, everything should be fine but I wouldn't go in it again though

Ya it's not safe. Make sure you tell your doctor next time you go just so she knows and is aware

I went in a hot tub like a hundred times before I found out I was pregnant ! (I was on vacation) I'm not recommending anyone do this, I just didn't know yet. When I found out, I freaked out and asked my future about it! She told me not to worry because most women leave the hot tub before it gets uncomfortably warm. The danger is if you stay too long and raise your internal temperature. I was just told not to worry but not to do it again!

You not supposed to be in a hot tub or a a bath over about 99 degrees period during pregnancy. It can cause you dehydration, it heats you up internally this overheating baby which can cause cell damage etc.

Hi there.  How far along are you.  The risk in being in a hot tub for 10 min or more is early on in pregnancy, the first 4 to 6 weeks.
