I know one thing that I  learned with my first pregnancy, you want to go as far as you can because any time you take off before baby goes against your time after baby.  You get three months with FMLA, and that is it.  I also ran into debating if I should leave before my due date something regarding short term disability.  You only get so many days for short term disability and if you go over those days (and maternity leave may count in your short term disability benefits like it did mine)--  you get different pay.  I ended up working until a week before my due date because I wanted time after the baby--  as much as possible.  Does that make sense?

Honestly, the best thing to do is check with your own company and their benefits.  Do you have an online site that you can look at for your employer?

Depends know your job and state. They could put you on maternity leave if you are 8 months. My cousin is 6 months and they put her on maternity leave because she is too big but that's her and they were scared she can be due any day and they don't want to risk it. Everyone is different though. My mom told me when she was pregnant she didn't get put onto maternity release till she was 8 months. It's up to your work and where you live

Maternity leave depends on your state. Look up FMLA for your state. Usually you have to be employed at least 12 months and the employer is required to give you similar/same position and same pay once you return. Maternity leave is usually not paid and is about 12 weeks.
