pre-cancer cells and pregnancy

The doctor told me that in my pap smear test, they found pre-cancerous cells, and have to do a colonscopy [pretty sure that's what it was].. I am kind of worried though, should they really be messing with my cervix while I'm pregnant? Can't that cause problems?.. What if it makes me more succeptable to infections, or it messes with the placenta or amniotic fluid? Does anyone know about this or have had this happen? and my mom told me that a colonscopy is painful? =/

I really do not think this was because of multiple partners.  I was a virgin when it happened to me.  It's just something that happens in women.  I have never heard of the multiple partners.  The only thing to do is just watch this problem and continue to have it treated.  like I said earlier I had at least 7 done from 16-22 and it has just FINALLY came back normal!!!! :)  Good luck!!!

also if you have a partner that is uncircumsized you could get it from them...my sons dr told me that when he was checking my 2 year old. he said he was so glad i got my son circumsized and that his wife would be happy because it could help prevent her from getting cancer there because men that are uncircumsized can pass it to their partners.
there are many different ways you can get it.
my dr gave me a big packet on it..i just have to find it.

Hi when i was prenant they found pre cancerus cells. A colposcopy is what they will do to you, and no it does not harm you or the baby. If they find alot of white cells that they need to test, they wait until you are not pregnant anymore to go in and pinch off cells, then they do a biopsy on them. They will just look in your cervix and take a few q tip samples. I had to go for the biopsy after 6 weeks of having my son. It hurt and i had cramps after it. they might find in your colposcopy that you dont even need a biopsy. Good luck and dont worry

I have a friend that had this procedure also.  She wasn't pregnant though.  I think what your mom meant was that this is called HPV.  I think it stands for Human Papaloma Virus.  I'm sure that is not how it is spelled.  I do believe it is transferred by sex.  That is what my friend told me also.  But for many people, they can contract this and their body takes care of it itself.  For those that their body does not, it causes these precancerous cells.

Oh and, i think that a colonscopy is something totally different.. well, obviously. i think it has to do with observing the digestional tract... i picked that word up from the forum talking about crohn's and i hadn't realized that that is what i said.. it makes much more sense that it's a colposcopy... haha. Thanks.

Thank you for the reassurance. I'm glad that you've had a similar experience, that helps.
My mother made a remark that I didn't like, or understand.. she said it is from having multiple partners, or a partner that had multiple partners. at first i thought of someone... but after i got home... i realized, i had used a condom with every guy i ever had sex with, and everytime, with the exception of my current boyfriend, he is the only one. And not only that, my friend had the same thing, but it was positive.. anyway, she was and still is, a virgin.. so how do you explain that? it doesn't make sense.. i don't think she knew what she was talking about.. this is possible cancer cells we're talking about, not an STD... has anyone else ever heard this from anywhere? i couldn't figure out why she said that.. she said she had it happen to her, maybe that's what the doctor told her years ago? i know i should ask her why she thought that.. but anyone hear of this?

It's a colposcopy and I had the exact same happen to me while I was pregnant with my daughter and this was not even two years ago.  I was not that far along when they discovered that I have precancerous cells and needed to do the procedure.  And as a matter of fact they did it twice.  I also was concerned seeing that I was pregnant and worried that it could do all sorts of things as well as possibly cause me to have a miscarriage, but they told me that it was fine and that they really weren't going to do a normal one and that they would wait until I gave birth to do another one.  Everything was fine and they just told me to take tylenol before I came in.  This helped with the pain. I had a little bit of bleeding and cramping so I spent the rest of the day in bed.  After I gave birth they did one where they got more samples b/c they didn't have to worry about a baby and turns out it came back negative.  I also got the shot (3 series) of the HPV shot...I think it's guardisil (sp) and I swear even though it said it wouldn't help if you already had the precancerous cells, but it did. I have had 4 paps since then and they have all come back normal..thank god! Trust me on this... you will be fine and you would rather be safe than sorry, b/c this is something you shouldn't mess around with.  It can become very serious and you can (if not treated) get really bad off from this. I am not at all trying to scare you, but I would stay on top of this.  Instead of having a pap once a year I was told and it was highly recommended by my doctor and others to have my paps once every 3-4 months until I had 3 normal paps.  But like lostwithoutyouss said it doesn't harm your baby or you.  Good luck!

i have the same thing and i am pregnant..
but mines not that bad.
the colposcopy is just when they look at you to see if they have to do a biopsy..
they just put some vinegar[[or some other chemical]] on the walls in your vagina..and use some tools to look closely to see how bad the cancer is..it burns a little. but i think it's worth getting it because you dont know how bad the cancer is and it would be important to know.
the colposcopy doesnt harm you or your baby.
i've already had 2 done. but some people do sometimes have reactions to the vinegar..after mine i had got yeast infections..but that was me..

here's some more info on it.

i don't know how to spell it but I think you are referring to is a colposcopy.  I have had numerous ones done since I was 16 and I'm not 22.  I'm not sure that they would be doing this while being pregnant  though.  I would call the doctor back to make sure.  You can even call like the health department and ask or another doctors office.  I thought they were going to do a colonscopy also but my mom called and they said it was a colposcopy.  sounds kinda like coal-pos-copy.  You will feel cramping that is really it.  After having my first one done I knew what to expect and it made it a lot easier.  You may also get a hot flash, but it's normal.  Mostly it was just abdominal cramps.

Well I even thought that the pap smear hurt a little ! and that's not saying much since most people say it doesn't. I don't know what to expect.. But I'm worried. I guess you're right.. He is an ob/gyn.. and he's a very educated doctor.. But I worry over everything..
