protective dog..help!!

I have a one and a half year old dog. He acts just like a baby to my husband, our room mate, and myself. However he is extremely protective and hates strangers. He never has bit anyone..but he has come close if a stranger walks into the house. I'm extremely nervous about having a new born around a100lbs dog. He lives inside and always has. He sleeps in bed with us as well. What are some tips on how to ease a newborn and my dog together? Has anyone ever been in this situation? Please help!!

Has your dog ever been around kids before? If not try to introduce the dog to children just for exposure. Also you can use a short leash to introduce the dog to baby and if anything happens you can pull the dog away. I have 2 dogs and I used a crate for a few weeks when I had my first child. Put the dog in a common area of where the baby would be ( not the bedroom) and the dog can watch everything you and the baby do. It helps the dog realize that the baby is not a treat and its here to stay. Over a few days/weeks it will be ok to let the dog out and interact with you and baby. A crate works great and I recommend it all the time for my clients. (I worked at an animal shelter/trainer) My dogs now are fabulous with my 1yr old and I hope introducing a second child will be easy and they accept. Hope this helps
