The advantage is that less radiation is received by the neighboring organs compared to the target area, thus reducing the severity of side effects. This is done by delivering radiation along more angles. There is some concern of a unique side effect which is fracture risk, because among the additional angles is inclusion of the hip. Discuss with the radiation oncologist whether or not such fields will be included (the way they are done for pelvic radiation in women with vulvar cancer).
