Are they safe for a man being treated for prostate cancer?
Thank you for your question. It is not unreasonable to perform a biopsy for a PSA level of 3.2 at 48 years old. Established risk factors for prostate cancer include african american race and first degree relative with the disease. Furthermore, your urologist may be suggesting a biopsy based on DRE (digital rectal examination) findings.
Sincerely,
Ashutosh (Ash) Tewari, MD
